This one just doesn't get old, it's the movie I pull out when I need a few laughs. Kelsey Grammer stars as Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Dodge who has been passed up yet again for command of his own submarine due to his unorthodox behavior. He gets one last chance at command from Vice Admiral Dean Winslow (Rip Torn). His last chance? Commanding a WWII era wreck of a diesel submarine, the USS Stingray (USS Pampanito), in a series of war games against the atomic powered USS Orlando. Admiral Winslow's advice? "Think like a pirate. I want a man with a tattoo on his (censored). Have I got the right man?" Standing in his way is Rear Admiral Yancy Graham (Bruce Dern) who is making it his personal mission to insure that Lt. Cmdr. Dodge fails by any means possible including by handpicking a misfit crew for the USS Stingray. Lt. Cmdr. Dodge's comments as he is reviewing the troops when they show up to board the boat: "Nice pants. Lose the cigar. Oh, you better burn that shirt, sailor... it's the crew from hell."

MY WHOLE FAMILY LOVES THIS MOVIE. IT IS A GREAT COMEDY VERY ENTERTAINING.THIS IS OUR SECOND VHS, WE WORE THE FIRST ONE OUT. IT IS MY HUSBANDS SLEEP AID . IT IS THE ONE MOVIE THAT CAN RELAX HIM ENOUGH TO FALL ASLEEP AT NIGHT. HE LOVES TO WATCH IT ON THE WEEKEND TOO. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT .

Down Periscope-Kelsey Grammar's Finest Work!!!I bought it so my mother who is 82 years old could have a big laugh. It is a blast! I love it! The language might make her blush a little but I know she'll love Buckman's indigestion and roll on the floor with the rest of us over the whale calling scene. My teenaged son we'll have to wrap her tummy so she doesn't bust a gut!!!

This movie has a couple laughs but it seems that it tries to be serious & funny at the same time. That turns out not to be such a great mix for this movie. The cast seems wasted but there are a lot of familiar faces here and some very funny actors that just don't seem as funny in this movie. This movie is still good enough to watch at least once though. But I can't recommend a purchase when there are better movies out there. 3/5
