Album Notes
If Robert Palmer was discouraged by the lack of a hit on his three initial records, he made sure that DOUBLE FUN would seize the listener. The opening cut, "Every Kinda People," written by Andy Fraser of Free, rides on the kind of ear-pleasing arrangement and melodic hooks that Palmer had previously lacked. This effortless blending of Marvin Gaye-style vocals over lush Motown-style orchestration and an incredibly infectious steel drum hook was a hit in the singer's native Britain.
Palmer shows development as a singer and a songwriter here, notably with one of his strongest early songs, "You're Gonna Get What's Coming," which was later memorably covered by Bonnie Raitt. This was also perhaps Palmer's most straightforward rock song yet, a genre he would later mine to great success. DOUBLE FUN is typically eclectic, with a straight-ahead cover of Allen Toussaint's "Night People," along with a take on "You Really Got Me" that definitively answers the musical question: what would it sound like if the Meters covered the Kinks?
