By now everybody who would play a game like this has already. Even so, I'll throw my 2 cents in.
This is an awesome game. When it came out in 2004 it was revolutionary. Even now in 2009 there are some things about it that are really outstanding, namely the atmospherics. The ambient sounds, sights, shadowing, are all top notch. The goal was to create a frightening game. Mission accomplished. I'm not frightened by anything any more, but when I play this I'm very tense and am often startled. Things like, "Whoa! Where'd that zombie come from!" are frequently being uttered. Awesome single player game. Very engrossing.
That being said, some of the things compared to what fps games are like today are "old." Rocket and grenade explosions resemble cherry bombs, both visually and aurally. When it comes to movement the person you play as has leaden feet. There is no way to effectively dodge attacks, and movement is slow. You can see an attack coming and you are mostly powerless to avoid it. It's kind of like, "well, here it comes...." BOOM. Dead.
While I like having a whole bunch of weapons available, it is unrealistic to think anyone could carry an rpg, plasma gun, machine gun, mini gun, grenades, pistol, etc., etc., etc. It would be more challenging if you could only carry 2 weapons besides your piston and a handful of 'nades. You'd constantly have to be deciding what to drop and pick up. I'd like that. I find whenever I play a fps I start to favor one particular weapon. In D3 my "go to" weapon is the shotgun. There is a LOT of close quartered combat and this weapon is deadly up close in D3. But with so many weaps to choose from I never have to lay down my shotty. I'd like the extra challenge of having to CHOOSE which weaps to take along.
I give this game a "Good" rating simply because it is not 2009 and so many other fps's since 2004 have upped the ante. If I were writing this in 2004, this would get an "Excellent". At that time, this game was arguably the best fps for PC that you could purchase.
