Features Acotrs:Jake Gyllenhaal,Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Beth Grant, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katherine Ross, Patrick Swayze & Noah Wyle
Running Time:132 Min.
Rating:R

It begins innocently enough around the Darko’s dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character.
On the surface, Donnie is very typical -- he has friends and even is (awkwardly) able to net a girlfriend (Jena Malone), but he’s also "intimidatingly" smart, which gets him in trouble for thinking too much and speaking his mind. But Donnie also has a troubled past of setting fires (thus the meds). And at night, he’s prone to bouts of sleepwalking, lured from bed by a fabulously sinister, six-foot demonic rabbit named Frank (a kind of Harvey possessed) that inspires him to acts of mischief -- like flooding his high school or torching the house of a creepy self-righteous motivational speaker (Patrick Swayze).
Interestingly, all of Donnie’s nocturnal activities seem to have a purpose. His first encounter with Frank gets him out of the house to avoid being killed by an airplane engine that falls through his bedroom ceiling. The house fire reveals that the motivational speaker has a dirty little secret. Plus, Frank shows Donnie that he can see into the future, and even perhaps travel there – a lesson that comes in handy later in the film.

Donnie Darko -- through all its twists and turns -- will keep you guessing, and talking about what it could all mean well after you watch it. You’ll just have to fill in most of the answers on your own.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

Donnie Darko- TOO HARD TO SUMMARIZE READ FULL REVIEW
Review created: 09/21/06

Donnie Darko is a very interesting complex thriller that will keep you guessing to the end. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jena Malone both do a great job at acting like they were in love, they have great chemistry. The plot is full of twists and turns that explore the strange world of a teenager that is hallucinating, or maybe seeing preminissions. The movies explores the complexities of time-travel and a person's fate or destiny. Jake Gyllenhall in his breakthrough role gives an amazing performance leading the audience to believe he is a little crazy. Patrick Swayze is a pedophile that scamming people out of their money to feel spiritually centered; the movie deals with complex issues of self esteem and motivation. I usually can figure out what will happen at the end of a movie about halfway through, but this movie had me guessing until the very end. This is a movie, most people cannot fully grasp the first time they watch it, so I would recommend buying the movie over renting it.

In the tradition of Stir of Echoes and Final Destination, Donnie Darko is an edgy, psychological thriller about a subrban teen coming face-to-face with his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal leads a star-filled cast (including Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze, and Mary McDonnel) as a delusional high school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past and deadly preditictions for the furture. this "Excitingly original" (Entertainment Weekly) nail-biter will kep you on the edge of your set until the mind bending climax. This movie is incredible. Its so deep you must watch it at least twice to understand it. My personal movie tastes include favorites such as Sin City, The Crow, American Beauty, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, V for Vendetta, Fight Club, K-PAX, etc. If one or more of these strike your fancy then you'll love Donnie Darko. It's clever with a constantly twisting plot that keeps you involved the entire time, and an amazing cast.

Was not what I expected at all from reviews and trailers - disappointing. Would not recommend, but the second DVD in this series regarding his sister is quite a bit more interesting or more of what I expected from the first DVD

Adam Lambert sang the song 'Mad World' on American Idol in 2009, prompting interest in the movie (performed by Gary Jules in the movie) as we had tickets to go and see gary in concert that month, I made a great buy in getting the movie. It is not a movie for everyone, sometimes 'dark' and sometimes just weird, it suggests time travel, tells a story of growing up in a not so perfect world.
I suggest that if you are buying Donnie, you also look at the sequel "S. Darko"

  -Donnie Darko- All time favorite

This is Jake Gyllenhaal's best movie! He portrays this character with such sincerity that you do not doubt the emotions, motives or oddities... I am an avid movie watcher and this tops my list of favorites.
The story line is one that catches your attention and keeps you involved until the very end. The fact that Donnie's sister is portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake's real sister, is amazing and gives that much more of a realistic touch to the film. The family seems to have a real bond with one another and makes for a very believable movie.
Donnie Darko is obviously an instant cult classic, a great choice for anyone who likes movies like Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, Jimmy and Judy and even Repo! The Genetic Opera. With supernatural themes, schizophrenic episodes, funny sibling arguments, and Frank (the man sized Bunny Rabbit) you just cannot go wrong!!!

Strangely enough I bought this movie because of the primary song, Mad World. I had never heard it, and somehow the movie had slipped by me as well. To this day, and even if I watched it multiple times, I don't think I ever really know what actually happens. It is tremendously thought provoking and well worth the money spent. The cast is composed of several major actors and actresses - but in parts not characteristic. The move is dark and tends to mesmerize. I don't know when I have been so affected.

  One of the best EVER
Review created: 04/16/08

This is a movie that is hard to categorize. On the face of it, it's a high school movie, about the intelligent kid who feels alienated, about awkward teenage romance, bullies, etc.

But that's just the tiniest bit of the surface.

A layer deeper is the skull-faced, six-foot-tall bunny rabbit waking you up and leading you on walks in the middle of the night, telling you to commit awful acts, and telling you exactly when the world is going to end (28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds), and what you have to do in order to save all the ones you love from this great danger...

Then, there's time travel, the sovereignty of God, and how that relates to time travel, personal responsibility, and how the tiniest decision can have the most gigantic and devastating effects on the people closest to you.

At this point, you wouldn't be blamed for feeling that this movie has too many plots, too many thematic elements, that it's too ambitious.

But you'd be wrong.

This movie is way way WAY too intelligent, challenging, and thought-provoking for the ordinary movie-goer. This movie encourages thought and introspection, instead of spoon-feeding easy and trite answers.

Although it was a spectacular FLOP at the box office (right at $600,000 in the WHOLE USA), it has since become a rather big hit across the pond, and now is a genuine underground cult classic here in the USA.

This is a fantastic movie in which everything means something, everything ties together, and it needs to be seen at least 5 times. It also stands up to repeat viewings because there are NO flick flubs, no continuity mix-ups, and therefore, you can watch it many, many times, and get something new each time, because this is not one of those movies that works the first time only...it all agrees with itself, and stands up to intense scrutiny. Unbelievably, it is the first work of director Richard Kelly, who was 26 at the time of the production. UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE! It's made all the more believable, and easier to suspend your disbelief, by the fact that this is the first BIG role for almost all of the actors in the movie, including Jake Gyllenhall, AND his real-life sister, Maggie, who plays his sister in the movie. The actors aren't thoroughly typecast, so it is much more easy to believe and enjoy the movie.

This movie will trouble you, make you really chew on it, creep you out, and THOROUGHLY entertain you, beginning to end, top to bottom. If you find that you cannot figure out the movie, go to the special features, go to the book "The Philosophy Of Time Travel", and read it. This will solve the mystery for you, or you can read the essays found when searching for "Donnie Darko Meaning" (Google that), and you can blend them together for a good idea of the point of the movie. OR, you can just watch it about a dozen times. It's really THAT GOOD. NO JOKE. Get it. Watch it. It'll really deliver the goods. I cannot be emphatic enough.

On a scale of 1 to 10, it certainly is a 9.7, without a doubt.

This dvd is the theatrical version. However, there are so many deleted scenes included that I belive all the extended scenes from the director's cut are in it. You just can't play the movie with extended and deleted scenes in it. This is one of the movies that the theatrical version is as good as the director's cut because some people argue the theatrical version stays mysterious while the director's cut reaveals everything. The theatrical version has some extra content as well, so the choice is yours.
