This will be a cult classic

This is an interesting movie, to say the least. Half the time, you’re wondering what in the world is going on. Surprisingly though, it does all come together in the end; and then you want to watch it again once you can make some sense of it. After you watch it the second time, you’re hooked. This is how cult classics are made. If nothing else, watch it because it’s different than all of the other predictable movies you’re used to seeing.

NOTE: You can find Jake Gyllenhaal merchandise at my store (http://stores.ebay.com/kelshideaway)if you are interested.

Features Acotrs:Jake Gyllenhaal,Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Beth Grant, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katherine Ross, Patrick Swayze & Noah Wyle
Running Time:132 Min.
Rating:R

It begins innocently enough around the Darko’s dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character.
On the surface, Donnie is very typical -- he has friends and even is (awkwardly) able to net a girlfriend (Jena Malone), but he’s also "intimidatingly" smart, which gets him in trouble for thinking too much and speaking his mind. But Donnie also has a troubled past of setting fires (thus the meds). And at night, he’s prone to bouts of sleepwalking, lured from bed by a fabulously sinister, six-foot demonic rabbit named Frank (a kind of Harvey possessed) that inspires him to acts of mischief -- like flooding his high school or torching the house of a creepy self-righteous motivational speaker (Patrick Swayze).
Interestingly, all of Donnie’s nocturnal activities seem to have a purpose. His first encounter with Frank gets him out of the house to avoid being killed by an airplane engine that falls through his bedroom ceiling. The house fire reveals that the motivational speaker has a dirty little secret. Plus, Frank shows Donnie that he can see into the future, and even perhaps travel there – a lesson that comes in handy later in the film.

Donnie Darko -- through all its twists and turns -- will keep you guessing, and talking about what it could all mean well after you watch it. You’ll just have to fill in most of the answers on your own.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

So What is it Like Having a Whacko For a Son????
Review created: 07/02/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a movie filled with ambiguity, emotion and often confusion. Donnie Darko is set in the late 1980's when the director/writer, Richard Kelly grew up as a teenager. It is not a thriller nor a horror movie, it is a movie about angst, growing up, what if's and life. There are no action sequences, nor is there any real gore, violence or sex. The director's cut is an ambiguous movie that drops you hints as to what the writer is trying to convey in the story line, and the original version is a movie that is completely ambiguous and leaves you to theorize and create what you wish.

Donnie Darko is a troubled teen that sleepwalks, we learn this from the first scene in the movie. If you watch closely you learn alot from that very first scene *hint - the red car that Donnie peddles past is very symbolic*. Donnie is on medication (or is he?) and has a imaginary friend (or is he?) Frank the Bunny. The whole basis of the movie then begins when Donnie follows Frank one night and a jet engine of unknown origin crashes through Donnie's house, and lands on Donnie's bed. Frank the Bunny then alerts Donnie to the fact that the world will end in less than a month and the movie really starts.

Frank then leads Donnie down a road of questions and acts that continue through the movie, leaving you to wonder what is real and what isn't. A perfect blend of phsycological mystery, humor, family drama, and sci fi that is so engrossing to watch that you don't even want to sip a soda and miss a frame.

You will in fact wonder what and why things are happening, what is all of this about tangent universes, the manipulated living and manipulated dead, but don't become too disheartened. This movie may click the first time, and most likely will the second time viewing. The director's cut is more storytelling by the writer as to what he wanted Donnie Darko to be compared to the original. Is the boy a schitzophrenic? Is there time travel? Is there manipulation of destiny by God, yet choices left free for man? These questions and more will be answered in this brilliantly shot and cast movie. A cult classic for sure, and imaginative and brilliant movie, no doubt.

  Donnie Darko Theatrical Release DVD
Review created: 08/30/09(updated 10/06/09)
by:

I feel the theatrical version (2002 DVD) is far superior than the director's cut versions out there. It really leaves more room for personal interpretation. Also, you can't go wrong with the introduction song: Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon. It fits better than that INXS song they used on the director's cut. This is the version to see.

  DARK BUT NOT TOO THRILL
Review created: 06/11/09(updated 06/11/09)

I read a lot of reviews about this Richard Kelly´s film and in a lot of them they consider this a Cult Classic Film, they even consider this superior to "The Butterfly Effect"(but maybe because I see this movie first), I think that the Ashton Kutcher movie is more entertaining than Darko.

The principal plot is about how different the destiny can be if we choose one way or another (time travelers), this kind of script can be seen too in "Stir of Echoes" and "Final Destination" and sequels.

The cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore (who produces this film too) an a young Seth Rogen as a school bully.

The dvd have alot ef extras like commentarys, videos, trailers, art gallerys, etc.

So if you are fan of the director, some of the actors or simply you like the plot watch it and enjoy it but don´t expect a masterpiece.

I must have watched this movie about a thousand times! It is one of my all-time favorites, next to Requiem for a Dream. Donnie Darko is a movie that makes you think, but in a good way. It's a little hard to understand the first time or two that you watch it, but it is well worth the figuring out. Love this movie.

Review created: 08/06/08

The first movie from this director, i find it really interesting because of the possibilities it proposes as a history, this was the first version of the movie released. And i think the directors cut is an attempt to make people fully understand it, however i like better this release.

Definitively a movie to watch either alone or with a good friend because it simply allows communication and opinions from each one when it ends, most of the people i watch this movie with tends to reply the same thing to me:

-(Me)Did you like Donnie Darko?
-Yes.
-(Me)Did you understand it?
-Nope

  #2 on the all-time-best top 50 independent flicks *****
Review created: 04/16/08

This is a movie that is hard to categorize. On the face of it, it's a high school movie, about the intelligent kid who feels alienated, about awkward teenage romance, bullies, etc.

But that's just the tiniest bit of the surface.

A layer deeper is the skull-faced, six-foot-tall bunny rabbit waking you up and leading you on walks in the middle of the night, telling you to commit awful acts, and telling you exactly when the world is going to end (28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds), and what you have to do in order to save all the ones you love from this great danger...

Then, there's time travel, the sovereignty of God, and how that relates to time travel, personal responsibility, and how the tiniest decision can have the most gigantic and devastating effects on the people closest to you.

At this point, you wouldn't be blamed for feeling that this movie has too many plots, too many thematic elements, that it's too ambitious.

But you'd be wrong.

This movie is way way WAY too intelligent, challenging, and thought-provoking for the ordinary movie-goer. This movie encourages thought and introspection, instead of spoon-feeding easy and trite answers.

Although it was a spectacular FLOP at the box office (right at $600,000 in the WHOLE USA), it has since become a rather big hit across the pond, and now is a genuine underground cult classic here in the USA.

This is a fantastic movie in which everything means something, everything ties together, and it needs to be seen at least 5 times. It also stands up to repeat viewings because there are NO flick flubs, no continuity mix-ups, and therefore, you can watch it many, many times, and get something new each time, because this is not one of those movies that works the first time only...it all agrees with itself, and stands up to intense scrutiny. Unbelievably, it is the first work of director Richard Kelly, who was 26 at the time of the production. UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE! It's made all the more believable, and easier to suspend your disbelief, by the fact that this is the first BIG role for almost all of the actors in the movie, including Jake Gyllenhall, AND his real-life sister, Maggie, who plays his sister in the movie. The actors aren't thoroughly typecast, so it is much more easy to believe and enjoy the movie.

This movie will trouble you, make you really chew on it, creep you out, and THOROUGHLY entertain you, beginning to end, top to bottom. If you find that you cannot figure out the movie, go to the special features, go to the book "The Philosophy Of Time Travel", and read it. This will solve the mystery for you, or you can read the essays found when searching for "Donnie Darko Meaning" (Google that), and you can blend them together for a good idea of the point of the movie. OR, you can just watch it about a dozen times. It's really THAT GOOD. NO JOKE. Get it. Watch it. It'll really deliver the goods. I cannot be emphatic enough.

On a scale of 1 to 10, it certainly is a 9.7, without a doubt.

Donnie Darko : THE Cult Movie
Review created: 01/28/08

"Donnie Darko" is one of the coolest movies ever. With a great cast, excellent soundtrack, and gripping plot, the movie grabs you and does not let go or disappoint. It leaves other "coming of age" movies in the dust and invites repeated viewings. I prefer the original version as the director's cut's additions actually take away from the viewing experience by adding to the running time with superfluous details. Check it out and tell them "They made me do it"!

Its a really strange and weird story, and i've watched it many times and still don't understand it completly. But thats whats so good about it. Its a really mind bending movie with a great soundtrack to it. So if you like strange movies that make you think.. Donnie Darko is perfect.
