Album Notes
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums).

Recorded at Fantasy Recording, Berkley, California; Can-Am Recorders, Tarzana, California; The Power Station, New York, New York.
After starting off the '80s on the wrong foot because of personnel defections, changing music trends, and various personal and business problems, the original Aerosmith line-up reunited for 1985's DONE WITH MIRRORS. Produced by Van Halen/Montrose knob-twirler Ted Templeman, MIRRORS is a bare-bones Aerosmith record that was last the band recorded without the benefit of outside songwriters.
The results range from the rhythmically slinky "Shela" to the funky boogie of "The Hop." Elsewhere, songs such as the hard-hitting "My Fist Your Face" and the slide guitar-drenched "She's on Fire" show the band was able to shake the rust off after almost six years apart. The truest sign that the spark of classic Aerosmith still burned deep is a cover of "Let the Music Do the Talking." Originally recorded by the Joe Perry Project, this interpretation is a runaway train of pounding rhythms, screaming guitars, and Steven Tyler's fiery harp blowing and a jive-talking delivery.

Most of this disc was recorded while in treatment, and this is a very underrated disc.Which goes to show that Steven Tyler can write some awesome music all drugged out or sober as can be.

The music's talking, and I'm telling it to shut up.

    Pros:
It's got two good songs, it's cheap, and it heralded the return of Aerosmith.

    Cons:
It SUCKS. How's that for tact?

Everyone knows the story of Aerosmith. It's just one of those parts of popular culture that, like Jimi Hendrix's "Star-Spangled Banner" and the reunion of the Eagles, won't go away. It's practically the template for VH1's Behind The Music---and each band is telling their individual story on that show. Band struggles. Band reaches top of the world. Band suffers from an artistic decline. Band either breaks up or makes a misguided attempt to continue on without founding members. Band reforms, reaches top of world and top of charts once again. So goes the story of Aerosmith. Band tensions and...

Aerosmith's broken glass fate didn't end yet with DONE WITH MIRRORS.

    Pros:
When this album is on fire, it smokes the competition.

    Cons:
A few misfires and a lack of solid production, not a true comeback.

This marks a return to my reviews of Aerosmith albums following the big rush of enthusiasm I received when Aerocat invited me to comment on the band s work with her write-off. I reviewed nearly every album that the band ever released on Columbia Records then and now, and did a review of the Geffen Records release PUMP from '89. Now, I owe it to myself to write some more about these guys. Thus, I begin where the early 80s left me, with the band s reuniting and recording of DONE WITH MIRRORS. The time is 1984, and it s Valentine s Day. Aerosmith had lost Joe Perry and Brad Whitford in 1979-1980.

And So the Great Comeback Began...

    Pros:
Aerosmith were back with a vengeance.

    Cons:
VERY underrated. Geffen's bad marketing scheme. Why do so many other users hate this album?

In the 1980's Aerosmith issued more appreciated comeback albums. But Done With Mirrors is equally essential. It fell on deaf ears in 1985, probably because of Geffen's mediocre promotion. The cover didn't have the classic winged-A logo we all know and love. In fact there are 3 versions of the album cover, the original pressings had the band and album name reading backwards (mediocre promotion indeed). Later versions would have the frontward cover, but still without the Classic "Winged A" logo we all know and love. Finally this problem was solved once and for all, and the latest design sits...

Aerosmith Takes A Good Look In The Mirror
    Review created: 04/20/02
by: SniperHockey -- a member of Epinions

    Pros:
solid album overall; great guitar playing; some catchy, infectious hooks

    Cons:
    a little boring at times

The year was 1985. Aerosmith was preparing to do the unthinkable--they were ready to stage what would be one of the biggest comebacks in the history of rock music. While their return to the limelight wasn't immediate, they needed an album to get them back on track and win back the favor of their old fans and hopefully gain some new ones. Simply put, they took a good look in the mirror and realized that they wanted to be rock stars again. Aerosmith hadn't been the same band since the departure of lead guitarist Joe Perry in 1978 and rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford a short time later. Even...

      "Pop" Says the Critic
    Review created: 07/04/00
    by: Tigerlily137 -- a member of Epinions

    Pros:
The original members are back together

    Cons:
Still on drugs during the making of this album...not very creative...you can hear the straint on Steven's voice

This is by no means a bad album. However, it is totally uncharacteristic for Aerosmith. Packed with catchy, pop music, Done With Mirrors is fun to listen and dance along to, but lacks the normal Aerosmith rock touch and creativity. This is the first album since the original band members reunited in the mid-eighties, but unfortunately, went virtually unnoticed by critics and fans alike. This was also the last album released by the band before they sobered up for good. Let the Music Do the Talking is the perfect album opener. This song was originally done by Joe Perry when he split from the...
