Can A Die Hard Doctor Who Fan Find Happiness in 2006?
Review created: 10/04/06(updated 10/05/06)

I have been a Doctor Who fan since the episodes starring Tom Baker and even John Pertwee were shown on our local PBS channels here. Those were the days of low budget cardboard sets and painted aliens wearing drapes for costumes.

So, can a die hard Doctor Who Fan Find Happiness in 2006?

YES!

I was apprehensive at first. I knew of Eccleston's work from Elizabeth I and had a hard time envisioning him as the good Doctor. I was pleasantly surprised. He is a convincing actor and pulls off the character of the Doctor quite well. He is silly and brilliant and stern and serious...he did his homework. Not since Tom Baker have I seen the role so well done.

It is so nice to see Doctor Who with a BUDGET. The sets are gorgeous and the special effects are top notch!

I like the Rose character but her mother and the lame boyfriend have got to go. They are pathetic an annoying.

If you are still skeptical, I suggest you rent before buying.

This Die Hard Doctor Who Fan Found Happiness in 2006 with this Doctor Who and I hope you do as well.

  The Doctor is Back!
Review created: 09/02/06

Fans of the original run of the show will not be disappointed, both new and old villains make an appearance and the oldest of villains become key to the overall story arc of the season. The Doctor and his companions visit the past and future and the laws of time are bent once again. Both the Doctor and Rose have to deal with individual consequences of interfering with the past and the future.

The scripts for the series are tight and very well written with very few holes. The special effects are pretty much industry standard. In my opinion, the character development is outstanding. I would recommend this show to both avid science fiction viewers and non-viewers who want to see how well written, acted and directed scripts can truly make three dimensional characters. Perhaps, in the case of Doctor Who, I should have said four dimensional characters.

"Doctor Who - The Complete First Season," is available as a box set or on four individual discs but, I would sincerely suggest that you chose the set. The season needs to be watched in its entirety to be fully appreciated. The bonus disc of "Doctor Who Confidential," in the set also, provides great insight into the series from inception to completion on an episode by episode basis.

Dr. Who !st Season DVD Set

From the moment you push "play" you will be transported, heart and soul, into another dimension. Headlong on to an action packed, well orchestrated, thrill a minute roller coaster ride that leaves you wanting more.

There is no shortage of special effects in this series. However, the actors and producers, it seems, have focussed primarily on the "human" touch; inviting, you, the viewer to be participant in the adventure. You will find yourself caring about what happens to The Doctor and his partner Rose and those they love.

Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, the magical duo, brilliantly create a family into which you are "adopted". You will travel with them through time and space, popping in and out of impossible situations, escaping death, and even touching yesterday. There is never a dull moment with the Doctor. The writers definitely stayed true to the legacy of the previous Doctors.....this incarnation is like nothing that has gone before.

All to soon it's over.....in sadness the adventure ends......you will quietly put away the last DVD and pray that the next series will be as great as this one.

Doctor Who - The Complete First Season
Review created: 07/12/06

The venerable science fiction program Doctor Who returned to British televisions in 2005 after a 15-year absence and delighted the majority of fans and critics with its adherence to the adventure and charm of the original series while making admissions for a new generation of viewers (hipper editing and score, CGI effects). Thirteen episodes were generated, all starring Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor and pop-singer-turned-actress Billie Piper as his companion Rose; acclaimed writer/producer Russell T. Davies (Touching Evil, Queer as Folk) oversaw the show as chief writer and executive producer. The new series proved so popular that the BBC agreed to revive the program for second and third seasons--though without Eccleston, who has since been replaced by David Tennant. This six-disc set comes with all 13 episodes plus the battery of supplemental features now customary to all Doctor Who DVD releases.
Eccleston is very engaging in the title role, bringing a manic curiosity tempered by occasional bouts of gravity (which befit a personality with a long and dramatic a lifespan as the Doctor's) that hew closely to the (arguably) most popular Doctor, Tom Baker. Piper is equally adept as department store clerk Rose--she's afforded more of a back story than most of the Doctor's sidekicks have received in the past, and she more than handles her own alongside Eccleston. Highlights among the 13 episodes include the season opener, "Rose" (which sees the return of an old foe, the Autons, and their controlling force, the Nestene Consciousness); the revamped Daleks in "Dalek" and the two-parter "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways"; a trip to Victorian England to aid Charles Dickens in "The Unquiet Dead," and of course, the arrival of the tenth Doctor at the conclusion of the action-packed "Parting of the Ways." The episodes strike the right blend of quirk, excitement, and imagination, thanks largely to the engaging performances and the guidance of Davies, whose admiration for the show and its history is evident throughout.

Supplemental features--and there are many--including commentary on all 13 episodes by members of the cast and crew, including Piper and Davies; numerous making-of featurettes, including a profile of Davies; a video diary by Piper; an interview with Eccleston, and best of all, a glimpse at the 60-minute Christmas special, "The Christmas Invasion," which picks up where the series concludes. Who fans won't be disappointed.

I have always been a sci-fi fan. Star Trek, Star Wars etc. Even though Dr.Who doesnt have the action and effects like alot of other science fiction I consider it to be the thinking mans sci-fi. as it leaves alot to the imagination, and is well written, and well thought out. The character development and story lines are always top notch I will always consider Dr. Who to be some of the best sci-fi of all "Time".

Doctor Who, Back in action 2006.

I am personally a Whovian. sure there are Star Wars fans, and Star Trek fans, but I have always found Doctor Who to be the greatest of them all, especially with over 15 years of episodes to watch. here is a time Lord with the power to do anything he wants, and he goes around the galaxy saving the universe, and his pet people us earthlings as well. of course the quality of action is not what you expect in today's movies, but overall these are some great classics and I suggest you add them to your archive today, and help the tradition continue.

Doctor Who - better than I remembered
Review created: 02/18/07

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm a Doctor Who fan from 35 years back, when Tom Baker played the role, and PBS was the only place to see the series broadcast. To put it in perspective, home computers were fanciful talk, vinyl records and cassette tapes ( yeah, even 8 track) were the media of the day, and special effects for a TV show involved no computer generated images, just whatever you could cobble together under budget, and if the plot couldn't hold it up, the show would be doomed.
Fast forward to now. I own some of those Tom Baker episodes from back in the day, and will, as the budget allows, get more of the early stuff; but the "New"
Doctor Who series, which hooked me instantly when I saw episodes on BBC America (on cable TV), hooked me instantly back in to the whole bit. The actors are good, solid, believable. The storylines more than hold their own, dialog is well thought out, effects are a vast improvement over what was possible back in the old series episodes, but ( at times ) somewhat less than we have come to expect, having been "spoiled" by the stunning effects now possible in huge budget movies. Suspend a little disbelief, and you're right there. The continuity between episodes is flawless to my mind, and the links between the old series and the new is what makes this true to itself, the major difference being that, now the Doctor is the LAST Time Lord, in the last Tardis; home world and race having been otherwise wiped from the universe. This doesn't stop him from being the same interloper in earthly near disasters as before, but he has some additional "baggage" now, and isn't beyond needing to learn a thing or topabout himself in harsh circumstances (as in the episode, "Dalek", when the example of that nemesis race gives the Doctor a "compliment").
I'm very pleased , and have also purchased the complete second season. Will keep up with new releases as they come out. So long as the writing stays up to the new standard, and the series remains true to itself, this Fan won't have to pine for "the good old days".

A true Breath Taking ride from the First Episode - "Rose". The BBC Are always expensive with their DVD releases. This was Still worth the money. The extra material has been Entertaining, Educational and Informative.

It Definitely whetted my appetite for the Second Season. I hope it is released in Region 1 format soon.

It is pure misery that the BBC does not release a Region 1 Version at the Same time the Region 2 version is released. I wish they would release one Version for all regions

I've been a fan of Doctor who for almost 3 years now. Ever since a friend of mine turned me onto the program. After watching just one episode [ "Rose" -which is the first episode on this set] I was completely hooked. Russell T Davies does a great job reinventing and reviving a classic of a television show.

Great for anyone who likes shows like Firefly or Warehouse 13. And if you've heard of Torchwood or Sarah Jane- you should already know who the Doctor is.

  I love Dr. Who
Review created: 09/03/09

I bought the Dr. Who first series DVD. I've been watching the series now since it started and wanted to have the first series to watch when I wanted and very happy I did. My son loves Dr. Who too. The DVD themselves were first rate not a scratch on them. I'll be looking for the rest of the series too.

I love this series restart of DR. Who. I grew up with the 4th doctor and watched it every chance I got. When he regenerated to no.5 the station dropped the series and I never saw it again. When Sci Fi channel started up the series here in America I waited for the first episode and was not dissapointed. I loved the new Doctor and fell in love with Rose. This is a must have for Whovians and Sci-fi buffs. It is a great fun show.

  Sci-fi genre, British television series
Review created: 07/31/09
by:

This is a fabulous kick-off to the rejuvenation of the old, British Doctor Who series. The series has been updated to present times and is not painfully slow as most of the older series, but keeps the audience interested with twists and humor. In this series, the Doctor meets Rose, his traveling companion, and they go through many adventures through time and space. This sci-fi genre has funny and witty writing by Russell T. Davies. British actors Christopher Eccelston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose deliver great performances. It may take a few episodes to catch on, but it's worth staying with it. This is only a precursor to the second, third and fourth season, and they only get better with each season. Love this show, now on BBC America!

Dr Who - Great TV series
Review created: 07/14/09

I almost never watch TV these days because the shows are simply not worth watching. Boring. So I have started buying the early seasons of the shows I do enjoy like Dr Who and this is really working well because I can watch them when I want and can see all the ones that I missed during the season (which I have discovered are many!) And I can see them over again after awhile. And no commercials!

I love the series, but the damage in the casing was a little to much for what the price I paid for it was. The CD's do not stay in their places, because of a broken part of the case. I bought it because I thought it was in good condition. The seller should have been for honest about what he/she was selling.

I'm an up and coming Dr. Who fan (I don't have cable, so in order to watch the shows I must by the box sets) and the "first" series is amazing. I love the storyline, the acting, and the actors. My middle and elementary school siblings love it as well and they are now hooked! But be forwarned: if you watch the first episode you *will* have to by the second! It leaves you hanging!

THERE'S A REASON THIS IS THE LONGEST RUNNING SIFI SHOW
Review created: 01/22/09

Welcome to Doctor Who. Wheather he's and old friend or your first time around this is a def for all Dr Who fans. I was one of the unanitiated, had always heard of Dr. Who but had never seen it. Then a friend of mine opened my eyes to this world. I was reluctent at first but after the first episode I was hooked. The 9th Dr. will have you quoting the show from the first episode on. Plus you got Billie Piper to look at and that an't exactly a bad thing. Now after the first series the 10th doctor comes un but don't worry I was very disapointed at first but the 10th doctor quickly became my doctor. This set sales for as much as $100 a series(same as an american season) here in the states and its worth it at that price(I'm just broke). Trust me even if you an't usually the SiFi type the doctor still has something for you. So get ready for a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey whimey,......stuff

Review created: 11/03/08

My husband to be and I love this series. We both watched the original Doctor Who growing up and really enjoy this latest adaptation of it. This was purchased as part of my wedding gift for him. I got him all three newer seasons of Doctor Who and both seasons of Torchwood that are available as of now. Along with those, I got him a couple of other Doctor Who themed items. I just know he is gonna love them all!
