Synopsis
Alyse Myers' thoughtful and unsparing memoir WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? opens shortly after the death of her cruel and unloving mother. As Myers and her sisters sift through their mother's belongings, she discovers a locked box that her mother guarded ferociously, and never let her children open. This box becomes a guiding metaphor for Myers' memoir, as she revisits her childhood: growing up under the seeming tyranny of her chain-smoking, cold-hearted mother; longing for her absent, drug-addicted father; vowing to grow-up, succeed, and never return. As the story unfolds, both Myers' and the readers' perspective of her unhappy youth undergo several surprising shifts, as her' mother's character and motivation deepens and become more complex and tragic.
