Do Hard Things by Alex Harris, Brett Harris (2008, Hardcover)

As a youth pastor, this was not only a challenging book personally, but also helped me put a finger on an idea I've been wrestling with: how does youth group fit in with church?

I also know Alex and Brett from when I attended their church in Gresham before becoming a pastor. I remember being a judge for a speech competition in which they spoke. They have demonstrated solid Christian character and are phenomenal men of God.

The book easily deals with the 'myth of adolescence' and the three pillars of the movement, character, competence and collaboration shed light on how churches can partner together for the kingdom and glory of God.

I needed to buy this book because we, as church youth leadership, needed to read this corporately in order to discuss and grow in our wisdom of how to minister, challenge and mentor young teenagers.

This book came as described and was in good condition. The book did not come quite as quickly as I had hoped though. I would buy from this seller again.

As a father of 3 teenage daughters, I would HIGHLY recommend parents to purchase/borrow this book. I had heard several stories about this book and/or it's authors, so I decided to give it a try. I purposely read it during my lunch hours prior to giving it to my children, just in case. I sincerely wish there had been a book of this character when I was a preteen, mainly to have something to light a fire in my future.
This book lets the young people of today, and the future, know they don't have to settle for the norm, and to "wait until you get older" to achieve your goals. They don't have to except the "dumbing down" our society and education process have excepted. They can be responsible at an early age and except challenges in their lives. Most importantly, it let's them know that no matter what, God Almighty will be by their side EVERY step of the way.

The book came in a timely manner and was in excellent shape. I loved the book it had a great message.

The Harris twins (Scott Harris, Josh Harris, etc., are in the family) present a much-needed challenge to contemporary youth to "do hard things"... things that stretch them physically, mentally, spiritually; things that take them outside their comfort zones; things that reach beyond themselves; things that involve healthy collaboration; in short, things that even many adults don't bother with anymore! Could also be entitled "how to become a man (or woman) in a few simple lessons." Highly recommended!

I work for a middle school. 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I thing that our teachers would love this book!

The greatest thing about this book is that it's written by teenagers. The concept...that teens should not just be sitting around waiting to be entertained...but they can and should be engaged in meaningful activities is one that needs to be promoted among today's youth. Seeing the time wasted by by some of my teenaged grandkids, I am hoping they will read this book and awaken to the idea that they have a contribution to make to society RIGHT NOW!

Great perspective on issues from the source! I would recommend this book to Youth and Family Pastors who are looking to work with students in the 13-20 something range. I was laughing about your comments about “older” writers attempting to deal with contemporary youth issues but it turned to tears when I realized I was one of them LOL :-o

Young adults/teenagers are challenged to set high expectations and pursue them... the culture is against you.. older adults do not understand you, but a look back in history and a study of 13-19yeear olds shows that we are really adults or children.. the teenager with low expectations is a made up role. Set high expectations and pursue them.

Heard about the book on Christian radio and was excited to order it for my 13 year-old. I have read the first few pages of this chapter book and it is a book written specifically for young people. My child does not really like to read, however, the vocabulary seems to be ok for his reading level and I think he will like to hear and be encouraged by what other young people are doing to make a difference. Am glad I found it on ebay since it is easy to use paypal!

I purchased this book after seeing a video clip from our church's youth pastor, as a promo for the conference that our youth group would be attending in Mpls. My plan had been to read the entire book before attending the conference with two of my children. After starting the book I realized that the book was so full of information that it could not be read quickly, in order to properly digest all that it contained. I have taken so much information out of each chapter so far. I meet with my kids multiple times a week to discuss that meetings reading assignment, generally one chapter every two days. I would recommend this book to everyone. Although geared to the younger generations, the principals apply to all. This book lays the challenge right our before you! If you want a challenge, read this book and put into practice what it says! Your life can't stay the same and be unaltered if you choose to "DO HARD THINGS!" Our society could use more people with the attitude, determination and outlook this book promotes. A must read for ages 9 and up!

This book is a great tool for challenging young people, and their parents to give up the false notion of adolescence and rather have them prepare for real life by serving and learning in ways that stretch them!

Book was in great condition. It took a while for it to arrive, longer than I anticipated- the shipping was slow.

My 16 year-old wanted this book, so I got for her and her brothers. I read it first, so if any questions came up, I would be prepared. What I didn't expect was how it spoke to me. There is a chapter named "Small Hard Things" that is so needful! That was the best chapter! You can do a lot of big things, but if the little things don't get done, sooner or later there will be a price to pay.
I really liked the book and wish every teenager from 10 to 30 (yes, I have some 30 year old "teenaged" relatives) could read this book, AND apply it! Churches need to have classes with this, give it to graduates, because it is an excellent resource.
If you have a "teenager", this book is an excellent choice for them!! But read it yourself first, because you will be challenged to change your life!
