Lightweight, this is both a BROOM and a vacuum!

I got this for my 94 year old mother (yes, she still does some of her own cleaning!) and it is extremely lightweight and easy for those who can't handle heavy vacuums to use. I think it is BETTER than a broom, since it not only gathers up the dirt into a neat pile but doesn't leave behind those annoying little particles that won't fit into the average dustpan (you know - that little line of dust that always seems to remain behind). The vacuum part of the broom sucks up any remaining dust or tiny particles.
Having noted all this, think of this as something to use for daily or quick cleaning or sweeping, NOT as a substitute for a good heavy duty vacuum. It is NOT primarily a vacuum, but a broom which solves the annoying problem of little bits of dirt and dust left behind. It is a GREAT broom and a decent vacuum for SMALL messes. I generally sweep up any large particles of dirt and paper BEFORE I turn on the vacuum itself.
Here's my step by step process for using this in my daily floor cleaning and, while it may sound complicated, I can finish an average room in under 5 minutes, tops (and again, my daily routine is NOT a substitute for weekly or bi-weekly deep cleaning).
1. BEFORE I TURN IT ON, I use the Dirt Devil broom/vacuum to gather up all the large and medium sized pieces of dirt. I then sweep what I can into a dustpan, leaving behind only the pieces small enough to be sucked up by the broom. Then I turn on the broom/vac and get the rest. By the way, it is GREAT at sucking up cobwebs on ceilings or floors!
2. I go over the floor with a Swiffer dry cloth, which I find picks up what the broom misses (although the broom doesn't miss all that much).
3. If the floor has mud or other spots, I use a mop or Swiffer wet cloth to get that. At this point, you can stop and your floor will look clean.
4. If there is dust or dirt build-up in the corners, I go over the crevices by hand, using a thin Q-tip or small brush to get out the build-up of dust there. I've found there is really no substitute for going over the corners by hand (but if someone has found a better way to get those areas clean, PLEASE let me know).
That does it for the average daily floor cleaning. Eventually, you'll need to deep clean as well, leaving time to thoroughly dust the air vents, baseboards, tops of window and door frames, door sills etc...but the above method works for daily cleaning and will certainly pass muster for unexpected guests or friends who drop by.
