Album Notes DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWELVE is currently available through mail-order by contacting Grateful Dead Merchandising at 1-800-CAL-DEAD or online at www.dead.net. Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (keyboards); Phil Lesh (bass, background vocals); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Additional personnel: Ned Lagin (bass). Recorded live at Providence Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island on June 26, 1974; Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts on June 28, 1974. DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWELVE is the 12th in a series of archival live Dead CDs overseen by the late Dick Latvala. (Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers.") In any case, the series differs from the band's "From The Vault" releases in that they're not documents of complete concerts and they're mastered from semi-pro two- and four-track tapes. Volume twelve derives from Boston and Providence shows from the summer of 1974; the sound is quite good and the band is most definitely on. Highlights include a spirited performance of "The Beer Barrel Polka"(!) and a simmering version of "China Cat Sunflower."
Editorial Reviews ...Features the massive 'Wall Of Sound' PA system and includes familiar improvisational vehicles...alongside crisp renditions of many of the fine songs from the band's MARS HOTEL album... h Dirty Linen (08/01/2001)
