Dexter -The Complete First Season (DVD, 2007, 4-Disc Set)

The most disturbing movie I ever saw was "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". In its portrayal of a man who lived physically among his fellow human beings while existing completely outside the orbit of human emotional interface, I thought I had seen the definitive screen rendition of a serial killer's psyche.

Then along comes Dexter who, with 12 episodes and a carefully-crafted life of friends, family, and career at his disposal for telling his tale, paints a portrait of sociopathic existence far more detailed and more disturbing than anything attempted by "Henry". That's accomplishment enough. But to do it with the droll wit and endearing demeanor of Dexter is downright amazing. TV seldom gets odder than this . . . and never more profound.

The real horror of each episode lies not in the killings by Dexter or by his victims. It lies in the horror of watching a man having to tread his way among his fellows in full knowledge that he is a hollow shell -- a body and brain devoid of a soul, with the only emotions being a fascination with blood and the driving hunger to kill. None of the means by which other people assuage their physical or emotional needs are available to Dexter, at least in the context in which others pursue them. Sex is a threat to Dexter, an act which can open cracks in the facade of humanity he has crafted and through which people can peer into the inner void. Friendly gatherings are obstacle courses, full of little bumps that could cause Dexter to trip and let his mask momentarily slip. Even eating, from which most people derive some emotional pleasure, is simply a necessity to which Dexter submits, preferrably combined with another necessary task, such as driving.

Clever. Interesting. But 12 episodes of this, no matter how well done, would soon get boring. So what sustains "Dexter"? Well, it turns out Dexter is neither who nor what he thinks he is. It takes him some time to figure this out, and it takes some help from rather interesting quarters. But Dexter has depths below the depths, voids within the voids, and substance where he was certain there was only nothingness.

But does it matter? Well, that's why I'm already pacing for the second season to start. It could go either way. Or, given this show's creativity and skewed viewpoint . . . neither, or both. Dexter -- and "Dexter" -- simply defy prediction.

This is a great series. Good writing, good acting, good everything. I watched the entire first season in 1 day...it is that good. If you like shows that are a little "different" and out there...then this show is for you.

I bought it for my boyfriend for his birthday and he was absolutely thrilled! He started watching Dexter in the middle of the first season so he missed the most important parts of the show. Not only can he watch it now but he can also see extra footage such as behind the scenes etc and he's pretty excited about it. I'm looking forward to watching it as well as the leading character was one of my favorite characters from 6 Feet Under.

I love Dexter and the show. It's very well written and exciting to watch. Leaving you on the egde of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. I can't wait for the next season to start. Dexter is a good guy and we need more people like him.

This show has creeped into my soul like a drug. I crave it, I need it, I love it and I fee,l oh so satisfied, once I get it. Dexter, has cutting edge writing, with incredible performances by all of the actors. Michael C. Hall was born to play this role. Dexter is soon becoming our modern day superhero, if you don't fall in love with this show (especially Dexter) you might want to check your pulse.

I actually wanted and received Dexter Season 2 as a gift this past Christmas. I have been a fan of the Notorious Dexter Morgan since the series was introduced!Saw Season 1, saw just saw season 2 and can't wait for Season 3 to come out!Both Seasons were GREAT!If you saw Season 1 you must see Season 2.The plot thickens!

I have to say this is a very entertaining series. Anytime you find yourself rooting for the bad guy - and a serial killer at that - you know the director has done a great job.

Dexter is a good series with mediocre acting. The story line saves the day. The actress that plays his sister is annoying. If she was half as hot as she thinks she is, she'd be twice as hot as she really is. (Think about it)

I guess my previous statement is a good summary statement. Mediocre acting wrapped around a great story line. I've seen the second season of Dexter on Showtime, and I can't wait for season three.

My daughter said it was a hot series... I see what she means. One chapter better than the next. You feel weird liking it, but it is well done and fun to watch.

I cannot say enough good things about this show. Where most shows are boring all season until the finale, this show is the opposite. Every episode is like the season finale. They go the places you don't think they will, revealing things you're sure they won't; and yet you're still left guessing and wanting more. If you love thrill rides, you'll love this show.

I found this show and it grabbed me from the first. Have told several friends and now they watch it. Has you guessing how he will get away with the murders and what his sister will think of him when she finds out. OR, will she ever put the pieces together?

Showtime came out with a great show with a great actor. I would highly recommend. Keep in mind that it is a very graphic show.

I really can't say enough about this incredible show. We subscribe to Showtime for this show alone. Stars Michael C. Hall (of HBO's hit series "Six Feet Under") as Dexter Morgan, a boy-next-door/serial-killer/cop who mercilessly slaughters hard-core criminals who have gotten away with their horrendous crimes. This is the only serial-killer you'd actually be rooting for, trust me! Watch as he tries to balance his "normal" life as a sweet brother, faithful boyfriend and loyal friend with his second life as a ruthless, bloodthirsty killer. This 12-episode collection will keep you on the edge of your seats. Season two just ended last month on Showtime and it was EVEN BETTER than season one! Can't wait for season three...

I am a horror buff when it comes to books and movies. This t.v. show is unbelievable! I have never found myself rooting for the serial killer but this show has changed the way I catagorize horror. Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) pulls this off so well, it is like he was born to play this character. I watch the new episodes on the original night they air. I don't usually watch t.v. shows more than once but can watch a movie over and over. This season has enough hidden in the storyline that I feel like I need to watch it again now that I have all the info just to understand Rudy. This show is innovative and fun! It is cool to see it from a killers view and how he handles situations with his distorted moral code. This is a must see show! The season on dvd is the way to go with this, cause during the season I go crazy waitting for the week to pass til I see the next episode. I hope this helps anyone make up their mind on wither they want this season for their own. Good luck!

I had to but the first season of Dexter to get in the loop since this is all my co-workers talk about on Monday Morning. I live in Florida, this series captures the "essence" of Miami like a dark, twisted "Miami Vice". Imagine a serial killer as the "good guy" for a change. I was hooked and had to watch 5 episodes in a row during my first viewing.

I bought this DVD series as a gift for my son. I loved the DVD as I had seen it myself a few weeks ago. Now I just have to wait for the DVD 2008 season to come out. It is very different that's for sure. Dexter is a man who beats to his own drum. Doing very bad things but you have to love him!! The best part is how he talks to himself and really just does not fit in.

When showtime keeps cming out with original programing, you have to wonder if some of it is medicore at best. The truth yes, some shows are just average, however this show defies all logic reason and yet keeps you hooked like a drug addict looking for his or her next fix. The show Dexter is about a kid who realizes at a young age killing is part of him, and to do it he will need the teachings of Miamis finest cop. What starts out a unique concept, gets short sided in the first episodes 15 minutes, the setup takes so long, you almost regret giving it as much time as you did. Then something happens to T.V. and your brain you figure out the formula for making a realistic portrayal of a serial killer, make him wonder if he has a soul and can he develop one? The answers to these questions can be found in season one and debated in season two. This could have been another gory dud, especially since I am not a huge fan of gore or anyone else I know. Yet I am proud to say Dexter is a fix I want to feed!!!

"Dexter" on Showtime is the best new show in the last twenty years. As far as quality, I put is right up there with "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under". It is no coincidence that both "Six Feet Under" and "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall, the multi-talented actor. "Dexter" is well written and the ensamble cast is top notch. As for me, I was hooked immediately by the dark humor and the quirkiness that Hall brought to the role. The Miami location just adds to the overall quality of each episode and Hall deserved an Emmy for his work as did many in the supporting cast.

This is an excellent show. While definitely for mature audiences and not for the weak stomached, Dexter is a completely intriguing character. You will be hooked by the first episode. I did not watch the series when it premiered as I did not get Showtime, but after hearing the "buzz" about the show, I rented the series and then had to have it. I have since bought Seasons 2 and 3 and have Showtime, and await each new episode with anticipation. I will be buying Season 4 when it comes out.

Dexter is an amazing television series! I own all of the seasons that are on dvd so far, and plan on purchasing all of the dvd's as soon as they are released. The entire series is absolutely wonderful!
