When CJ Floyd returns from his latest collar, he finds that his part-time employee, former rodeo cowboy Morgan Williams is broken-hearted. It seems that one of Williams' oldest friends, pro-rodeo Hall of Famer Cletus Dolbey has been murdered. A torn piece of paper with the dead man's signature leads CJ and Morgan to a struggling energy company that owns some worthless, barren mountain peaks known locally as the Devil's Backbone. But are they really so worthless? Soon CJ finds himself on a lethal trail of diamonds, greed, jealousy--and murder.
