Publisher's Note
A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses.

Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to complaints about “The Boss from Hell.” Narrated in Andrea’s smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns and over Cosmopolitans at the trendiest cocktail parties. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda’s children in Paris by private jet, to locating an unnamed antique store where Miranda had at some point admired a vintage dresser, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day—and often late into the night with orders barked over the phone. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul.

Industry Reviews
"Weisberger writes with humor and authority, but her plot circles like a whirlpool...."
Kirkus Reviews (02/15/2003)

"A Judith Krantz for the new millennium! Lauren Weisberger has produced a work of trash fiction of such unimpeachable quality--I enjoyed every page--that the golden girls can hang up their spurs....Weisberger writes with the passionate intensity of a ninth-grader whose pride has been wounded, and I forgive her much....[N]othing can hurt a book like this...; a career has begun."
Atlantic Monthly - Caitlin Flanagan

"It's hard to get past the onslaught of Page Six gossip and film-rights buzz that has preceded THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, Lauren Weisberger's thinly veiled roman à clef about her thankless year sidetracked in the trenches of a fashion magazine. Start with a Mommy Dearest premise featuring our most famous fashion editor, add an irresistible title and throw in a six-figure movie deal--does it even matter what's actually on the page when everybody is reading between the lines?"
New York Times Book Review - Kate Betts (04/13/2003)

      Really a Witch!

I bought this book to take on a trip two days before the trip - but it was so great I had read most of it before the trip even started. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the book in that it pointed out the faults of the fashion industry - having models who are a size zero instead of the twelve most women are, being fashion obsessed and thinking the more it cost the better it is. The values are warping our young women (and some of the older ones who should know better!). The ending was a slight disappointment - you expected her to "win" in the industry - but she wins in what she really wanted to do all the time (you’ll have to read to find out what it is – I can’t give everything away). It is a great book to point out the priorities people should have - that friends, family and lovers should come before success and being really successful does not necessarily make you happy and if you're not happy you spend your time making everyone around you miserable. Overall it was an entertaining book with a message. I'd give it a 4.5 (above good, but slightly below excellent).

I could only relate to the villain -- is that wrong?

The best part of "The Devil Wears Prada" is its cover. I'm not a big fan of chick-lit to begin with, but this specimen takes the cake. The main character, Andy, is whiny and one-dimensional. I kept waiting for her to grow a spine and when she does, it's anticlimactic, making this book really boring.

What bothers me most is that readers are supposed to be sympathetic to Andy's plight of running seemingly pointless errands for a year in exchange for a job recommendation. Here's why:

    1. If you hate a job, quit. Find another way to achieve your dreams. People do it every day. But don't worry about our heroine; after spending time at a job she hates and getting no published work out of the deal, she manages to land a job at another magazine!

    2. While she runs errands, we're supposed to feel bad that Andy's "forced" to wear designer clothing and shoes, which she snags for free at work. We're also expected to feel sorry when she ruins the clothing and needs to change into different designer duds. Did I mention that she also gets her hair and makeup done?

    3. Andy is supposed to represent normal women (you know, all us normal 5'11", 120lb women), yet I couldn't buy "affordable" Anne Klein shoes on her budget. Maybe she shops on eBay, but I doubt it. I couldn't relate to the character and didn't really care to try.

    4. We're supposed to feel sympathy for someone who ignores her family, best friend (and roommate), and boyfriend because she's busy at a job she hates. Oh, but she can spend time with another guy, because it's work-related.

In fact, the only strong character in this book is the one we're supposed to hate: the boss, Miranda. When taking Miranda's attitude out of the equation, I actually admire her. I mean, she has a staff of people doing her bidding; she makes time for her kids, and she's a highly-influential female in the fashion industry. Very impressive. Most women are still trying to find that balance.

I don't recommend this book for anyone. It's just not worth the time.
