The devil made her do it.

I read this book basically to see why there was so much fuss about it. The movie was coming out and there was some not so discreet buzz that Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, was the model for the book's boss from hell, Miranda Priestly. Naturally, one would be intrigued.

Once I got into the meat of the book, I was disappointed. The litany of Miranda Priestly outrages pile up tediously and you get it, yes, she's an unreasonable, cold blooded she-demon in designer clothes. The draw of the book is the way it slams the fashion industry and influential people like Ms. Wintour, ahem, Miranda Priestly. And, sadly, we all love a good slam.

I wish this book was more of a guilty pleasure, but far too soon I felt dragged down by the harping on a superficial theme with mediocre writing. It's a superficial book about superficiality.

Although the book tries to pretend otherwise the trod-upon heroine of the book, Andrea, has a superficial arc: she learns to dress better. She's essentially the same person as at the beginning and pretty much spends the whole book knowing she needs to quit the job, but she leaves it with a better fashion sense. And maybe this is enough to ask of one the trademark "chick lit" books so prevalent out there now, but it wasn't enough for me.

Author Lauren Weisberger presents Andrea in the first person as she chronicles her experiences at "Runway" magazine and let's us know she is a writer of talent. Except her writing proves otherwise, it's often awkward and feels adolescent.

It's enjoyed best on the level of a giggle at the expense of the ridiculous pretensions of the fashion industry and people who max out their credit cards on one-season Manolos and Birken bags. I give it two meh's and a hee.

Meryl Streep is the best actress on the planet. Wow !!
Review created: 01/20/09

A great movie, ending is rushed, but a witty gas the whole way thru.

And I mean it Meryl Streep is amazing, she just nails it.

Buy it, watch it and see it again.

Blessings, Max Rainet.

Thanks for your shipping. When i just got it the surface disappointed me because it didn't look clean and haven't been well preserved this is a little different with the detail you said online. Also, this book must have been read or used for a long time, it's not as good as i think.
A good news is inside the book it's neat and have not underline something i am happy with that. If the surface look like that it will be great.
That's it. Anyway, thanks for shipping.

I 've decided to buy because I watched the movie and my daugthers like to read, but, personally, my opinion is the book does not need to have a lot vulgar and bad words, can be a good book for all public below 14 years old people, but looking the book,my teenagers can't read, she told me- Mom it has a lot bad words for me..( that was she comment)

The Devil Wears Prada is better than the Movie
Review created: 06/25/07

Of course everybody knows that books are better than movies. Well this movie was basically the same as the book but did leave a bunch good stuff out. Like the part when Andrea quits. The book was so much better than the movie in this part. Of course the ending was also different. The book much better.

Anyway, I read this book in like two days. It kept my attention the whole time. The writer is awesome. If you ever get a chance to read it you must do. Do not judge the book by the movie. The book is so much better.

  Delightful but Sometimes off...
Review created: 11/19/06

What Would You do if your Heaven-Sent job turned out to be a Living Hell? What I would do, I would be like Andy and prove that I'm tougher than the others. I kind of enjoyed this adult read, even though it went on-and-on sometimes. I didn't really care for all of the "curse" words in it, sometimes it was funny reading them and who Andy was saying it to in her mind. I also didn't like the insult Andy spoke about Harry Potter "The fourth book in that wretched Harry Potter series was due to be released the next day, a Saturday, and Miranda's ten-year-old daughters each wanted one." I didn't enjoy reading that about Harry Potter because I enjoy reading that series, but I read on. This is a must for any person who loves fashion. I'm not a huge fan of fashion, but this sparked me. What really interested me about this book was that I saw the preveiws of the movie on television. I love Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, so I wanted to see it. But, I wanted to read the book before I saw the movie when it came out. I can't wait to see how the movie is like, I hope it is like the book but a little different.
Note: This book goes on-and-on sometimes and may leave you bored with it. But, don't drop it but finish it. Even though it went on-and-on sometimes, I didn't give up on it and I liked it. I didn't love it to give it "Five" stars, but I liked it enough to give it "Four" stars.

Hope you enjoy!

I decided to buy this after seeing the movie 3 times in the theater and absolutely loving it. It turned out to be quite different. I loved the dysfunctional best friend and how the charming man wasn't as involved as he was in the movie. I didn't like how the book ended. It left me saying "well what happened with so and so..." But still a fab book

  Great Book
Review created: 09/10/06

The Devil Wears Prada...and is the new boss of recent college graduate Andrea Sachs. Miranda (the devil) is an over the top editor of a top-notch fashion magazine where Andrea lands her first job as Miranda's assistant. You won't be able to stop turning the pages of this book just to see what outrageous request Miranda will make next. If you like books by Sophie Kinsella or Jennifer Weiner, this is the book for you. Funny, quirky and smart.

  Devil Wears Prada Worth Reading
Review created: 09/05/06

I saw the movie and decided to read the book. As usual, books and movies aren't the same. What intrigued me was a movie review saying this book was based on a real life experience. I am not familar with this lifestye and wanted to be educated. I am half way through the book and I liked the view the author had because she came from an educated background not a worldly background.

  Catchy title...
Review created: 09/04/06

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. However, the main character did the same kinds of things over and over in the book. The things she said and did were very predictable and served only as a means to lengthen the book. In our materialistic society this book fits the mold. I think I bought this book because it has a catchy title and I love Prada purses. I think I should have left my money in my Prada purse!
