Synopsis Armand Aubigny and his wife Desirée produce a black child. Armand assumes this "tainted" heritage is on his wife's side because she is an orphan with no knowledge of her family's history Shamed and horrified, he abandons Desirée and their son--only to discover that his mother is descended from slaves. Chopin's story aims to point out the concept that "racial purity" is an absurd and destructive concept, and that only racists see such divisions between peoples as problematic.
