Album Notes Personnel: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar, drums); Bill Janssen (vocals, saxophone); Christy Bley (vocals, keyboards); Audie Belew (piano); Clif Mayhugh (vocals, bass); Larrie Londin (drums). This compilation contains 21 digitally remastered tracks from LONE RHINO, TWANG BAR KING and DESIRE CAUGHT BY THE TAIL. Includes liner notes by Adrian Belew. This 21-track compilation provides a sampling of Adrian Belew's first three solo albums LONE RHINO, TWANG BAR KING, and DESIRE CAUGHT BY THE TAIL. Cuts such as "Big Electric Cat" and "The Man in the Moon" recall the nervous, rhythm-oriented avant-pop of David Bowie and Talking Heads, a comparison strengthened by the resemblance between Belew's singing and that of Heads' vocalist David Byrne. True to his King Crimson roots, however, there's a fair share of bold instrumental work, including "The Final Rhino," a duet between Belew on guitar and his four-year-old daughter on piano. The cuts from TWANG BAR KING show Belew expanding his songwriting chops to include sample-oriented funk ("The Ideal Woman"), backwards Middle Eastern dreams ("She is Not Dead") and cacophonous danceable rave-ups ("Paint the Road"). But the prize selections are DESIRE CAUGHT BY THE TAIL's multi-textured, painterly instrumentals. In "The Gypsy Zurna," African drums, tape loops and Belew's trademark rhino guitar sounds form an organic pastiche, while aggressive, rhythmic patchwork patterns evoke dark visions in "Portrait of Margaret." These tracks are an exceptional bonus to this sampling of Belew's first solo recordings.
