Kip Hanrahan creates highly cinematic albums; the individual songs themselves are smartly arranged, and in addition, the overall structure of the album itself flows with its own organic logic. DESIRE DEVELOPS AN EDGE was his second release and is also one of his best.
It opens with the title song, an extended instrumental percussion piece and then leaps right into a Caribbean-derived dance song featuring Jack Bruce on vocals and bass. The horn section wails, punctuating the rhythmic festivities with sassy vigor. Composer and leader Hanrahan is a smart collaborator, calling on a wide variety of players and giving them plenty of room to leave their own mark. Highly percussive throughout, the songs are rich with passion and tropical sexuality.
