Album Notes Solo performer: Adrian Belew (guitar, percussion). Fans of Adrian Belew's King Crimson recordings and his more experimental session work will feel right at home with DESIRE CAUGHT BY THE TAIL. Unlike the Rhino King's later solo efforts, which are dominated by a more melodic pop sensibility, DESIRE features abstract sound paintings in the tradition of the challenging, intricate, instrumental mayhem that earmarked Belew's many contributions to rock's avant-garde in the late '70s and early '80s. A total guitar-as-orchestra document, DESIRE is self-composed, arranged, produced and performed, on guitars, percussion and a battery of effects. The track list pulls the listener through a delirious gallery of evocative, cinematic soundscapes. In the surreal "Beach Creatures Dancing Like Cranes," flashes of Middle Eastern structure materialize amid monstrous guitar lines that approximate the imagery of the song's title. A hurdy-gurdy, nightmare carnival feel characterizes "Laughing Man," while "The Gypsy Zuna" features a pastiche of African drums, heavily textured tape loops, and Belew's trademark rhino guitar sounds. Throughout, Belew's formidable wizardry as a musician, collage artist and sound architect par excellence makes this canvas of instrumental gestures one of his finest achievements.
