was originally going to get the Denon flagship, the Denon AVR 5800. But I figured at over $3000, getting the extra power without the Dolby Pro Logic 2, and Denon not advertizing an upgrade of the 5800, the extra $1500 was not worth it, so I went with the 4802.
Denon has outdone itself. The 4802 sounds great, has all the sound processing bells and whistles you could ever want until the someone comes out with a new one.
I put its weight as a con, but is it really? This thing is built like a tank, as it should be. But be advised, you might need a truss after you lift the 4802 a few times.
If there is anything really "wrong" with this package, it's the remote. The Aktis remote is simple, which I appreciate, but it is so simple that it is cumbersome and repetitive. You have to scroll through a number of screens just to get to what you need. The LED light doesn't stay on long enough, so you have to keep pressing the light button in order to find what you want.
There is something I don't get. The Aktis is a universal remote. But the Denon DVD 2800 cannot be turned on with the Aktis. What's the point of that? The point of a universal remote is that you can control everything from one remote. If you cannot turn other machines on, then you have to go back and forth turning them on and off THEN go back to the remote for the functions. Poorly done, Denon.
It's important to note though, this machine is best at home theater sound reproduction. The two channel stereo is good. Better than most. But it pales in comparison to the home theater processing.
In all, this is a great machine and worth every penny I paid for it.

Amazing Power & Home Theatre Clarity

I purchased this unit about 2 1/2 years ago. Denon is a leader in home theatre products and for good reason. This receiver rocks!
MY SET-UP
I am currently using this receiver in a 5.1 system although this receiver will handle 7.1 (I have pre-wired but not taken the jump yet). My front L&R speakers are a pair of SpeakerCraft Starlet 4's in-wall speakers. These speakers suck alot of power. Install instructions for these speakers recommend a double run of 10G wire to each speaker because they have 4-6" drivers per side. I use a SpeakerCraft Centre Speaker LCR-3 and 2 SpeakerCraft AIM Ceiling speakers for rear channels. This is backed by a 12" Paradigm Sub and a Pioneer 42" Plasma.
The ability this receiver has in a home theatre application is stunning. The clarity and imaging is precise. Note that this receiver takes a bit of set-up to get it tweaked to preform at its best. I highly recommend picking up a radio shack sound meter...it simplifies the process.
Prior to buying, I read reviews on this model and all were VERY positive over-all. The one complaint I kept reading about and agree with is the remote. It came with the Pronto touch screen remote and I couldn't wait to replace it. I now use a Univeral Remote MX-800 and it functions great. Don't let the remote stop you from purchasing a great receiver.
The only other thing I have grown to miss as technology advances is HDMI switching. This receiver will handle component, composite, s-video and RCA video but it was on the market prior to HDMI. I look forward to one day switching to another Denon with this feature...If I ever get permission from my wife!
This is a great buy...especially at the price of used. This unit retailed in Canada for $3100 at our local retailer.

This is a great surround sound receiver.This surround sound receiver has alot of power and you going to need some great speakers to go along with it. I love the sound it puts out. The remote control is so big, and hard to see the display (light stays on for about 30seconds) another than that I love my receiver.
