Dell W1700 17 in. HDTV-Ready LCD Television

I purchased this TV about 6 months ago as a computer monitor/TV... I'm still not sure which one suits this TV better... The quality of this TV is incredible for watching High Definition and likewise hooking it up to your computer with a DVI cable... Has a total of 6 inputs: DVI (computer only because of the refresh rate), VGA, HD Component, S-Video, Composite, and Coaxial... Also features Picture In Picture (this feature works only while using the TV as a computer monitor and watching TV in the corner, 3 different sizes, 4 positions)... Even if you don't have access to HD television, hook this to your computer with the DVI cable and get an amazing widescreen digital picture that you have to see to beleive...

Good Expensive Short Term TV/Monitor (life expectancy approx 1-2 years)

Purchased this unit about 1 and half years ago, after reading allot of good reviews about it, of course there was nothing but positive reviews on it, it was new in the market. All worked fine until a few months ago. Audio/power light works but no picture (black screen). Noticed that I’m not the only person with this problem, Dell support will be of no help so you have to either fix it your self or have it professionally repaired (Approx cost $100-$250)
I have to say it’s a good TV/monitor when all is working on it.
-Backlight inverter blows due to bad CAP
-Advice: if you buying a refurbish unit make sure it has a NEW backlight inverter installed.

I read up on this item before purchase and it received rave reviews...Based on those reviews I purchased a Dell W1700 TV/Monitor...To say the least I'm very impressed...I dont understand all this specification jargon, but I do know this TV/Monitor is an awesome buy...Easy set up and everything is laid out for easy access and connectability...There is a dustcover that protects the inputs and is easy to remove and replace...I bought mine with the adjustable stand...I almost think the stand is the most impressive part...Telescopes up and down and TV/Monitor tilts back and forth...Make viewing from any angle pleasurable...Instruction manual and Remote are very simple to read and operate...The LCD screen itself is sharp, clear, and colors vibrant...With the ability to adjust brightness, contrast, color etc, it's very easy to adjust to each diff program source...This TV/Monitor is an awesome buy...So if you want a jam packed TV/Monitor at a fair price, get a Dell W-1700...I would almost say, if you buy one and don't like it, i'll buy it from you!!!...

I bought this TV for my mother when she was placed in a nursing home. I wanted a flat panel to make it easier to transport & use. The panel being adjustable made it great as the rooms do not have the room to move the TV carts, plus it was strapped to the cart. I understand HDTV will be a necessity in a couple of years and this little guy has it. The picture quality is great and the TV was the talk of the nursing home. Mom would get up in the morning to find others (including staff) watching the TV or the chanel had been changed. The good news is mom is back to her home & we haven't decided what to use the TV for now. It would make a great computer monitor. The remote is easy to use & it was quite easy to set-up. My only 2 complaints are it is not directly head-phone compatible & the speakers on the side made it pretty wide. The audio output can be adapted from the RCA connectors to a mini-jack, but the headphones must have sound adjustment. The Dell name lived up to my expectations.

I purchased a factory rebuilt of one of these from someone here on eBay and was thrilled to death with it for about six months. When it works it's an amazing unit that outperforms anything else in its size available today. After about six months it suddenly quit working. The electroluminescent display panel went totally blank. Now I know why factory rebuilts are available.

I gave it to a friend who likes to tinker with broken equipment. He did some Internet research (sorry I don't know where) that said that the driver circuit for the illuminated panel at a faulty design. There was someone who was selling a replacement circuit board that was supposed to solve the problem for $80 but I don't know where that was or if it really worked.

So the bottom line is it's a really great TV and you can get some excellent prices here on eBay and other close out places but you're rolling the dice on how long the unit will actually work.

I've had nothing but problems with this TV and Dell's non-customer care. If I use the remote for any reason to change the input mode, channel or volume, the screen goes black and the sound gets really loud. I have to spend 20 minutes sometimes turning the tv on and off before something gets reset and I get a picture again. Some days it's fine, but more than 75% of the time I experience this problem at least once a day. Do a google search on this model and you'll see that this problem happens to many, many people. I'll never buy another Dell product again.

I will keep this simple. I purchased the Dell W1700 here on Ebay. The spec's sounded good, so I thought I would get it. The TV is so much smaller then the spec's give on. The screen is tiny. When you get closer to the screen, the image is pixelated. The colors are off when it comes to some shows and cartoons. The stereo speakers don't play very well at all. Very dull. Dell used to make a lot of their own products here in the USA, but not this TV. I wanted to buy Dell because of this fact. I could have just spent another $100 and purchased some poorly made, Chinese Piece of TV garbage. Instead I purchase a poorly made Chinese piece of TV garbage, masked with a Dell logo.

I wouldn't suggest this TV to anyone. Maybe the larger version works better, but this one doesn't. Now I'm stuck with a TV that will sit in my closet until I sell it or give it away.

I purchased 4 of these units. I kept one for the kitchen and gave three as gifts. Compared to my Sherwood 17" HDTV this one has a much clearer picture, better color and does an even better job and taking 4:3 broadcasts and streatching it to 16:9. The resolution for my PC is fantastic as well.

Bottom line is that my Sherwood has been retired to the unused spare bedroom and I watch the W1700 in the kitchen almost daily.

I don't think I could have gotten a better deal.

Perfect desktop or bedroom TV. Excellent controls, nice swivel base, great stereo sound. Looking for another for the guest room.

I have had a few of these apart and repaired a few for use as a computer monitor and a space saving TV for the kitchen .
The design is really fantastic, it is compact, light and the stand is well made.Really a nice well thought out unit (in my eyes ).
The main problem I see is, excessive heat ,this thing gets way hotter than my 19" Dell monitor,also it appears that it had some defective components that couldn't take all that heat.Who knows though, someone might have tried to dry their underware by draping it over the cooling vents.I would not advise this, put it in a place where it gets lots of ventilation and I bet they would not have had so many premature failures.
Maybe I just might use it to help warm up the bathroom this winter.

This television has a good picture hooked up to an SDTV source, although I always think of it as a monitor, becuase that is my primary use for it. The picture in picture feature is excellent, allowing me to work on the computer and have a television in the upper right corner. For HDTV use it probably has limited appeal, due to a lack of an HDMI input.

i think it is pretty nice quality picture, but it was supposed to have a wall mount but it didnt i wanted it for my office but it ended up in my game room

Pros: This is my second one. I purchased one about a two years ago. I use it for television and monitor. Excellent picture and it has analog & digital adapters for computer. Its customer friendly and I've had no problems. The 5 watt speakers gives a quality sound unmatched for this size monitor,
Cons: none so far.

One of my most favorite PC/TV out there it can be used for both and has the HD capabilities if needed.

Exellent The power switch was brocken I fixit works perfect I'm very happy with the transactionI I have another one just like it The picture whent out I found a replacment part that was goyng to cost about the same price I pay for this one and now I have spare parts.

Great little television. Perfect for my use in the bedroom. I really like the sound and picture/screen choices. I especially like the stand, very adjustable. You'd be happy with this purchase.

I like the fact that the product provides TV usage on a 17 inch screen. I couldn't find another product that allowed for TV viewing on a compuer monitor that small. I also like the picture in picture feature which allows me to work on the computer while watching TV.

I have had this tv for a long time and its great,hdtv and you can split screen between pc and tv.The remoe is easy to use and sleek alsi i like the adjustable stand so you can raise,lower or turn the tv.exxcellent buy.

Clear picture. High def capable. Serves as a decent computer monitor. The stand is way too heavy. It runs a little hot. Menu's are sometimes confusing or a hastle. Good tv. Good buy.
