Best monitor (and value) on the market

If you are looking for the best 24" LCD monitor you can buy, the Dell 2407 is your choice. I've had this monitor since it first became available and couldn't be happier. Often available for just over $700 this monitor has nearly every feature you could ask for and easily beats the Apple 23" Cinema Display (which has the same LCD panel)when you consider that the Apple costs $999.

The stylish LCD display and stand are 24" widescreen with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The display height can be adjusted and even rotated into portrait mode (something the Apple display can't do). While you will definitely be impressed with the large, bright display - it is the many smaller features that really set this monitor apart from it's competition. One of the big reasons I waited for this monitor was that the 2407 has HDCP (which the 2405 it replaces did not). HDCP allows the monitor to be used with High Definition (HDTV) devices such as setop boxes or DVD players that use HDCP copy protection. If your monitor doesn't have it, some devices won't be able to send a signal to it.

Here are the other features that the 2407 has over the competition:

    - Multiple input connectors with picture in picture capability
    - Inputs include DVI (with HDCP), VGA, RGB component, S-video, and RCA composite
    - With the DVI and component inputs this means you can connect your HDTV set top box, XBOX 360 or upconverting DVD player and enjoy true 1080i and 720p video!
    - Built in media card reader that accepts 9 different formats of memory cards (SD, memory stick, compact flash, etc.)
    - 4 USB 2.0 ports so you don't have to dig around behind your pc or mac to connect USB devices
    - 1000:1 contract ratio
    - 450 cd/m2 brightness
    - 16 ms response time
    - VESA wall mountable

this monitor is truly amazing....homeboy who posted otherwise must have it on the default settings....i changed my settings and this monitor is amazingly gorgeous once calibrated...get the A03 version only though, as this version is the best and had fixed all the previous firmware problems such as slight banding and ghosting...no bandng, no ghosting, no streaking, NO PROBLEMS! if u have the right graphics card to run games in its native 1920x1200 resolution...u will be in ecstasy....even my xbox360 looks absolutely stunning..better than any hdtv i compared it to...again, on the A03 model , i ran gradiant and dead pixel tests and the results were perfect!!! standard, it comes with a 3yr warranty, 5yrs for only 50 bucks extra, not all electronics aere perfect, so if there is something wrong then dell ships a new model that u will have in 2 days!! excellent peace of mind!! hands down, a must have, thank you....

Huge, Beautiful Screen with Some Serious Flaws

Pros: 24" 1080p Widescreen, enough said. Unbeatable price. 3 Year Warranty
Cons: DVI only works properly with the computer. Component quality stinks. Some bits of banding and ghosting. Dell refuses to fix all the issues, and they are on their 4th revision (A03)!!

Don't get me wrong, I love my monitor and I couldn't live without it. There is no way you can get a high resolution 24" widescreen for $750 anywhere.

If you are serious about picture and color quality (ie heavy photo editing) or use more than one input (plan to use Component or DVI for watching HDTV or DVDs through your set top box or DVD player or play Xbox 360) be warned that the picture quality absolutely stinks outside of using the DVI for your computer. I've tried to do HDTV over the DVI (doesn't work) as well as the Component (terrible picture quality and bad color balance).

If you are like me and just work on spreadsheets and surf the web, watch an occasional movie, browse through pictures, then by all means buy this ASAP. If you plan on doing more, then you really need to stop and think about this purchase. Dell has had many issues with this monitor, they have had 4 revisions (from A00 and is now on A03 and some issues are still unresolved)

But, even with all those problems, I still had a tough time deciding on 4 or 5 stars. I'd rather give it 4.5, so my rating is 9/10 - almost perfect.

This monitor has great features, like the various inputs and the USB Hub which I use often and card readers Which I have not used yet but you do need to stop these devices if you are going to shut the power to the monitor off and leave the PC running to avoid PC shut down problems later. It is a good looking monitor at the higher resolutions that it is capable of, but not the lower ones. That being said I will share my dislikes. Windows nor the internet use technology to make good use of the high resolutions. With these higher resolutions the windows get smaller and smaller making them hard to see. This should not be a problem since you can go into the monitor settings tab make the print DPI in the advanced setting larger and make icons larger. The problem with this is when you do on line to web pages with a higher resolution this is where you begin to see the real problem. Web pages get smaller and smaller as well. At 1152 X 864 you are still in good shape, you can eliminate the scroll bar on the bottom of many Web home pagers like MSN and Yahoo. However when you go much higher (this dell boosts a whooping 1900 X 1200 max), The larger fonts settings will cause the print not to fit into text boxes, radio buttons and etc on some of these pages and often can not be completely read. Perhaps if my eyesight was better I could use the smaller fonts. I played with the settings and maybe I am missing something. I ended up using a 1680 X 1050 res and a DPI setting of 120 (125% of normal). The main idea behind this purchase was to see it better and to be able to work in 2 windows at the same time, like an excell sheet and a word at the same time. The other limiting factor was desk space. If I had the room I may have been better off using dual monitors, something to consider if you are thinking about buying this. But if you have good eyesight this may be great at the higher res and smaller fonts. just some thing to consider, good luck with your descission.
