Great Value, Great Item, Huge Storage, Simply Amazing!

First, we will start with pricing. I purchased this on eBay a couple months ago for only $199. Dell sells the unit for $299, and I got many more accessories with mine, for $100 less than what Dell charges for the Dell DJ 30GB.

The fact that this little unit stores 15,000 songs is amazing. It will take me a long time to fill up the 15,000 song capacity with this huge 30GB hard drive.

Likes: Only 5 buttons plus the barrel scroller on the unit, very bright blue LCD, Easy Song Access, Can Delete Songs From MP3 Player, Fast Transfer to MP3 Player, Clear Sound, Great Sound Quality

Dislikes: I do not dislike anything at all. What I will say is that Dell needs to make better headphones. Don't get me wrong, the ones that come with it are great, but Dell needs headphones that compare to the iPod headphones.

I purchased it mainly because of value, the name(knowing Dell & its service), and the ease of use.

The verdict: Perfect for a first MP3 player, or looking to store tens of thousands of songs on the unit. Buy better headphones. Definitely purchase this unit. Do not hesitate. You'll be very satisfied. This is like getting a Cadillac for the price of a Toyota!

  I love my DJ!

I love the fingerprint-free surface and being able to create playlists on the fly. I tried an ipod once but found the wheel wasn't intuitive for me, and the surface always looked smudged. I've had my DJ pretty much since it was released (2 years ago), carry it with me everywhere I go, and it still looks and plays like new!

  Dell DJ Offers Great Value

My wife and I own 2 Dell MP3's: the 5GB pocket variety and the 30GB iPod equivalent. The Pocket DJ is a fantastic MP3 player considering its ease of use, 5GB capacity for the pocket size and price compared to Apple. Navigation with the DJ's is a bit more cumbersome compared to iPod that many of our friends have, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. The sound is terrific, however, I would recommend upgrading to better quality headphones. The downloading/burning software provided by Musicmatch is adequate. We experienced major problems with earlier versions of software/hardware compatability. However, the two companies have seemingly fixed the bugs. Dell's support was very good, if you're patient in communicating with technicians in India. It's definitely worth saving $80 - $100 with Dell vs. Apple. The only downside is that aftermarket products are more limited to non-Apple MP3 manufacturers - a very small compromise if you ask me.

Save yourself - don't buy it!!

I thought this Dell DJ was a great little MP3 player when I got it. I even had the 5G version and upgraded to the 30G, I liked it so much. It's easy to use, basic and straightforward.

The dirty little secret is that Dell stopped manufacturing these about a year ago. And conveniently enough, they don't have to stand behind the product anymore. The latest ones sold are unlikely to still be under warranty, which is the only way you'll get any company support on the thing.

My DJ died suddenly - with no warning whatsoever, I just couldn't turn it on one day. I tried everything I knew but the injuries sustained were beyond my capabilities to repair. Apparently the battery is dead and it's not replaceable. Interestingly enough, my DJ isn't the only one that's died recently. And I've only had mine for a little over a year.

So if you want a player that will probably go kaput on you in a few months, and you'll get no help or support in resuscitating it... go ahead. But don't say I didn't warn you!

  Good Ole American MetalBox
Review created: 01/03/08

I love my dell DJ, I am a person who listens to metal, stuff like Vader, Lamb of God, Slayer, Sepultura, Slayer, and Demiricous. The sound quality is not the best, I use high -definition headphones by Sennheiser, and it is not something to cry over, you will be better off adjusting the EQ yourself, rather than using the preset equalizer. It is 30GB, and I bought mine for only $70, and that is a pretty good deal. I also use it in my car, on my stereo at my house, and I plug it into my LINE 6 amp, because it is very easy to operate when I use it for jamming along to a song on my guitar.

I named it MetalBox, because first off the casing is metal, which has proven pretty durable, because I ran it over with my van at the mall parking lot by mistake, it dropped out of my pocket while I was climbing to the seat, and I ran it over with the FRONT WHEEL!!! Which is baaaad because the motor is in the front of the car. Nothing happened to the MP3 player, not even a scratch on the scrolling barrel or the screen. And it also contains 18GB of metal music on the HDD, so it kinda makes sense.... a joke get it? Metal-Box... metal + metal box.... i think you got it.... i see you rofling and lmaoing over there....

Now it is a great time to buy one of these, if you are looking for quantity of songs, rahter than quality and video watching, than go right ahead, HYPERMICROSYSTEMS is a great seller of this item. Search longer and you will score a low price on this item, it is the thing for every music listener out there.

The controls are kind of dull though, there is a huge lack of options, I mean you can't even finter and sort the songs, let alone the settings menu, it is totally lame.

I love it though... it is my little metal box.

Also, once you buy it, check the firmware, if it is 1.02XXXXXXXX then search around on the DELL website, and download the right upgrade for the right model you have and update it to 2.08XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. It is pretty simple. It gives the ability to upload music as if it was a flash drive, without having to use all the funky software and drivers everybody hates.

Have fun!

  DJ's, like a brick, huge,
Review created: 08/29/07

DJ's are huge and a pain to carry around. If you have the option, buy warranty because the manufacturing of them is not reliable. Sometimes the hard drive is fried by the time you get it. Once you do get a good one though it will last. Getting music on the dj itself is another problem. Music match is terrible, and dj explorer doesnt work with all computers. DJ's are durable, except after a while the buttons stop working, and on my first dj the scroll wheel popped off. Being able to make and delete playlists and delete songs on the fly is a useful feature though.

  Dell DJ (30 GB) MP3 - I Bought a Lemon!!!
Review created: 02/06/07(updated 02/09/07)
by:
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I already owned a Dell DJ 20, so I thought I'd upgrade to a 30 via eBay, since Dell quit making them last year. I personally think it's superior to the iPod. Although the one I bought was advertised as being in perfect working order, it won't load songs in the order in which they appear on the album--for some reason, it loads them in alphabetical order. Dell's help line tried, but was unable to help me, and my friend (who works in IT) put in many troubleshooting hours, to no avail.

Theoretically, it was a great idea to pick up a 30 because I've had my 20 for a couple of years; it's never given me any problems, and I love it to pieces. This has turned out to be a miserable experience and a waste of money for me, though, because the item does not operate as the seller claimed.

Caveat emptor!

Soldiers MP3 Player, and its sand resistant!
Review created: 12/13/06
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There are three things any soldier should pack along before being deployed overseas; a laptop, personal GPS, and an MP3 Player. My civilian employer at the time offered discounts on Dell products, so I bought my laptop and MP3 Player with them.

And im glad I did! The Dell DJ 30 GB is wonderful. Durability is a key for any item your taking with you into a hostile environment, both weather and other conditions. My MP3 player stood up against sand, rain, sand, bumps with other unpadded military equipment, sand, drops, bangs, dents, and sand!

The hard metallic case is not only cosmetically pleasing, its also very functional! The screen has a double layer of protection, so if it does become cracked the screen will continue to function.

Dell used the KISS system throughout. Simple design of a few buttons means less possibility of malfunction, and its easy to navigate firmware is able to meet all your organizational needs. The simple LCD screen design with blue backlight may seem bland in today’s high standards set by iPod, but in truth, sometimes is just better! You can see it on the fly and I think its just one of those things that saves in costs overall because you realize your saving over $100 from a flashy iPod.

I do recommend using Windows Media to send to the MP3 player because I personally have never been a fan of Musicmatch. Headphone upgrades are a must. Other then that durability is this MP3s shining star. With ease of use right behind it!

Did you ever own something that you just liked so much that when it finally wore out or broke, you had to get another one. Well that has been my experience with the Dell DJ 30 GB. No longer available in the open market, this is the only place I could find it. It was sold as new, delivered new, and I couldn't be happier with the entire transaction.

  Dell DJ 30 GB MP3

This is a very nice unit. I bought it for my niece for Christmas. It has a good size display screen and an easy menu to follow. The 30GB is a very large memory. I love music and I don't think I could come up with 7500 different songs to listen to. This much memory could be used for video or pictures but the machine doesn't have those options. I own a ZUNE 30GB and have 550 snap shots on it with 1200 songs and still have 23GB of space left. So if I were opting for this much memory space I would get something like a ZUNE to use the space for things other than music. For music only I would save some money and go with maybe 15GB and that would still have room for 3700+ songs!

  Dell DJ 30 GB Junk
Review created: 01/05/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this Dell because it was a good price and would have more memory than my former Phillips MP3 player. The jukebox software is cumbersome, there are NO upgrades available for Vista, and mine died without warning after only a little use. I tried rebooting, reformatting, reinstalling firmware and there is an apparent hard drive problem within the unit. There are no more upgrades for the software and Dell does not stand by its product. VERY DISSATISFIED.

Love my Dell DJ so much I bought a second one!
Review created: 09/06/09
by:

As others have stated before me, it's easy to use, durable, dependable, the battery lasts and lasts... I got one about 2 years ago and use it almost daily. I carry it walking, I jack it into the aux input of my home stereo and/or computer speakers (let the DJ play and I don't waste computer memory running an audio progrom).

Right after I got it, I bought some more accessories for it. It didn't come with the little docking station, but once you have the dock you'll never want to use that MP3 sync cable again. I got a better slip case with a belt clip.

I love the docking station sitting on top of my computer but since I use it with my home stereo in the living room I wanted a second dock to keep there so that I'm not using up battery power (it charges in the dock) or fiddling with cables (there's a line-out on the dock that you can connect to a receiver or computer speakers). I couldn't find anyone selling just the dock alone but I got a good deal on a used DJ that came with a dock, so now I'll have that second dock AND a second DJ that I'll probably keep at work.

I also got the remote control, which plugs into the top of the player and then your ear buds plug into the reomote. The good thing about the reomote is that you can clip it to your jacket or shirt and control the DJ from there without having to take it out of the case or out of your pocket to pause, skip or adjust the volume. I love THAT even more. The remote reduces the chance of dropping the main unit. The remote is also great if you can find or make a place to clip it in your car, that way you're not looking down trying to handle the DJ while driving. The remote is as easy to operate as the DJ itself if you don't need to see the screen.

The complaints I've seen others make are about it suddenly quitting. Thankfully this hasn't happened to me yet and I've had my first DJ 30 for about 2 years now. I bought it refurbished, so hopefully it will be around for a few more years. If yours dies, you can find repacement batteries and hard drives on eBay. If you can't get the DJ open to install parts your self or if you're afraid you'll shag it up, I'm sure you can get your local computer geek storefront to do it for you.

The only thing I don't like, which is pretty minor, is that looking at songs and finding things is completely dependent on ID3 tags. A lot of things you download don't have correct ID3's (the artist is spelled wrong or it's just called "Track 12" or something. If you need to edit ID3 tags to make your song collection more user friendly then I suggest downloading STAMP ID3 Editor from http://www.nch.com.au/tageditor

Overall, I'm very happy with my DJ. Definitely get the 30 gig version. Not only does it have a bigger capacity (obviously) but the 30s are also newer than the 5 or 20 so theoretically will last longer. Find a refurbished unit if you can but ask the seller what they did to it and what was replaced in the refurbishing process.
