James Dickey's first novel Deliverance is about a canoe trip in rual northern Georgia, on the Cahulawassee River.
The novel starts out the day before the trip, with the four characters meeting in a bar to set their plans. Four middle class men; Lewis, the outdoorsman who has been to this river before, Bobby Trippe a salesman of mutual funds, who enjoys comfort, Drew is a family man, and Ed Gentry, The narrator of the book.
The river is about to be dammed and, soon, the entire valley will be a lake. Four friends from suburbia Atlanta, through the hills they go, encountering primitive people and hazardous nature, fighting to survive and return to civilization.
Dickey's Deliverance was made into a film with the same title in 1972, Starring; Jon Voight as Ed Gentry, Burt Reynolds as Lewis Medlock, Ned Beatty as Bobby Trippe, and Ronny Cox as Drew Ballinger.
An exciting adventure, two cultures in conflict: city fellas against country folk. Deep in the woods, remote, uncivilized, primal. The journey from innocence to experience.
