Defiance (DVD, 2009, Sensormatic; Widescreen)

In a movie taken from a true story, Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace,
Casino Royale, Munich, Road to Perdition, etc) stars as one of four
Jewish brothers who escape from Poland into the forests of Belarus
during World War II to lead a band of resistance fighters and create
a safe haven for Jewish refugees. The real-life sanctuary established
by the Bielski brothers saved more than 1,000 Jews from persecution and
death in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. A great many war
type scenes are shown as the Nazis try everything from Polish & Belarusian
Police type actions against the camp. As the fighters from the camp
defeat these efforts, finally the Nazis detach a full fighting division
of infantry and artillery to destroy the camps and Jewish fighters.
Liev Schreiber (Salt, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Taking Woodstock,
Mantle, etc) plays another of the brothers in the movie and works perfectly
with Craig in their parts. Veteran War Movie director Edward Zwick
(Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Glory, The Siege, etc) directs this
movie to perfection and his normal high standards. He shows the hardships
in the camps from lack of food to freezing conditions and the working
relationships that overcome the hardships. A great movie that many will
enjoy-especially students of World War II-as this is an unknown part to
most people. Also, War movie devotees as well as action and adventure
enjoyees should enjoy it to a high degree. Will definitely give most
of these movie watchers a great night of entertainment-and most others will
enjoy a top notch acting job in a top notch movie by Craig & Schreiber.

This movie was about a small group of people that attempted to hide from the Nazi regime in the forest while they were killing jews.

Very suspenseful and dramatic. Each character played a great role in this movie!

This is a fabulous movie that shows you how strong the human spirit is and that good can come from evil. I loved this movie is worth watching.

This isn't just another holocaust film. Defiance tells an original and well produced story that touches a part of Nazi history which many people haven't heard of. The film has a perfect cast and is able to pull off nearly 3 hours without getting boring. My only small complaint was with a few choppy slow motion scenes that (in my mind) could have been done much better with a different effect.

I love how the movie strayed away from late WW2 (1944-1945, D-Day, West Front, ETC).
It set the movie in Western Russia (or East Front) and showed that people of Jewish faith can fight back and survive in the harsh unforgiving winters that Russia offers. The Bielski Brothers, or the Bielski Otriad as they liked to be called, went into the forest after their parents were killed by the SS. They lived day by day until they started meeting other Jews in the woods and then they started a small community and built shelter and gathered food for everyone. Their policy was no stealing, they will ask for food that can provide and leave those who cannot.
It is a thrilling and SHOCKING to say the least, a must buy!!

Great movie I've been waiting to see it for along time and now I have the dvd it's great. Always been a fan of the main guy since he became bond.

GREAT STORY...GREAT MOVIE.....sleeper movie.... well written.... really well film better then most movies I saw this year

I bought this movie on E-Bay for about $6(price+shipping). I love war movies and I had heard some good things about this film and read some good reviews. I enjoyed watching the film and felt it was well made. However, it was only a good move and I have seen much better efforts. The acting was good but nothing great. The editing was weak and it felt that the film had been edited for time. The film also had several conflicts going on at once. Between the nazi's and the jews, the jews and the russians, the brothers running the jewish partisans, between the leaders of the jewish partisans, between the religious and secular jews, between the sympathetic and anti-semetic russians etc. All of these conflicts added drama to the story but tended to confuse me and distract from the main issues in the film. While watching this film, I couldn't help but be reminded of a similar and a truley great film, "Come and See." While I can recomend Defiance as a good film, Come and See is a great film.

I bought this movie not knowing anything about what the movie was about. I was pleasantly pleased. My husband and history teacher brother watched it with me. It kept you interested through the whole movie and since it has to do with the nazi period my history buff brother had lots of input afterwards. It was a side I had never seen or heard about. It was action packed. It would be good for men and women to watch (not just a chic flix). It is a movie I would watch again. I hope you try it AND ENJOY IT!

Very realistic rendition of the exploits of a band of Jewish partisan during WW
A vivid recollection of the exploits of a band of jewish partisans during WWII. Realistic with nothing spared, some of the events are not for everyone, like executing the police chief and his family after they massacre Jews. influence from previous holocaust movies is noticeable, but this movie builds on them rather than duplicating them. A must see for people interested in this subject.

For me, this was the best movie I have ever seen in my life. It gives hope and shows that one must stand up against evil. The acting was excellent as well. I know that this was a true story as I have met some Bielski family members.

I dislike the fact that I never received the DVD but I did pay for it. I purchased this item on July 7 and here it is August and I still don't have it.
