Album Notes DEEP HEART is the sixth release from master new age guitarist Doug Smith. The album is a nice mix of original pieces and covers and that are all executed with modest, unfussy panache. Smith's shuffling right-hand rhythms and technically impressive fingerpicked melodies form the sonic centers from which these songs build. Evanescent keyboard shadings and reverb-heavy drum pulsations help cast an introspective glow throughout. "Highway 26 (Sidewalk Cafe)" is redolent of a Bob Ross-like world of verdant forests and mountain sunsets. One anomaly is the upbeat and Celtic-toned "The Jig is Up," which contains the kind of fretwork capable of sending guitar gurus into metronome-addled seclusion. Covers include a take on "Nights in White Satin" that's even more symphonically lush than the Moody Blues' original and an AM-radio-ready version of the John Michael Montgomery chart behemoth "I Swear."
