Album Notes
Personnel includes: Steve Swallow (electric bass); Chris Potter (saxophone); Ryan Kisor (trumpet); Mick Goodrick (guitar); Adam Nussbaum (drums).
As a title, DECONSTRUCTED does little to explain this fine album. Though the melody of the title piece turns around and inverts itself in Mobius-strip-like ways, the track bustles along with the '60s post-bop fervor that marks all of Steve Swallow originals. As always, Swallow's writing is warm and, as evidenced by "Lost In Boston," occasionally quite witty.
Swallow and his quintet of cohorts are trying to build on a lost art, not recapture it. The tandem horn lines of Ryan Kisor (trumpet) and Chris Potter (tenor saxophone) go a long way towards establishing an identity that traces itself to the halcyon days of the Blue Note label. Guitarist Mick Goodrick has worked with Swallow in previous ensembles, most notably alongside Gary Burton. But there's not a retro moment to be heard here. These ten pieces are in a distinct tradition. Far from upsetting that heritage, they simply dive into it, fully acknowledging the fact that it's the '90s.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars (out of 5) - ...the group expresses a strong communal feeling....you will not find a clinker on this luscious date of Swallow tunes....musicians will love the liner notes, which are literally just that with miniature pages of sheet music of each tune...
Down Beat (10/01/1997)

...Swallow has brilliantly chiselled out the bones and bloods of yester-year's showtunes and reconfigured them into delightful offsprings that are brimming with imagination, sensuality, and swing...
JazzTimes (09/01/1997)

...this is a brainy...jazz project....often, Swallow will flex his rebel wit....it's capital J-Jazz with a restless taste for invention...
Jazziz (08/01/1997)
