I dunno, people have been doing this for years

I bought it because I cursed myself, why didn't I write a cookbook based on something I clearly did not invent nor should I take credit for and then depend on my ginormous tv start husband to promote it for me. I'm sorry, I've been putting sweet potatoes in my nephews' pancakes since Thanksgiving 1492. You know when you make 16 sweet potato pies and you've got like 2 qts of puree left, it doesn't take Jerry Seinfeld to figure out where you can put it - I also put it in gingerbread cake, carrot cake instead of butter and there's the ever-popular idea of stuffing french toast with brussel sprouts - ha just kidding, just wanted to see if you read this far. No kidding, this book has been done before. Anyone who has been around kids, cooked for kids or been a kid has done all of this stuff before. Oh and by the way, here's the thought I came up with when I went to babysit my nephews and nieces, I just make the veggies and make them eat them, no negotiating. Why would you spend your time negotiating with a kid? Boy, does that teach them about the real world?? Yeah.

  Eat your fruits and Vegetables!

We are approaching the end of the Terrible Twos and are coming upon the big 3 soon and we are in the NO phase - those with toddlers know some just will not eat anything good for them!

I have not used the book yet but have read it and I love the set-up of it. Jessica's writing style flows well and you can feel yourself nodding in agreement with some of the incidents she mentions with her own brood as well as some of the tidbits provided by other parents.

I love how she has right off the bat what you will need in your kitchen and pantry to help make "Operation: EAT" successful. I skimmed the recipes and found them very easy to follow and the photographs show how appealing and enticing the food actually is.

The spiral binding with the hard cover and the size of the book is perfect, you can easily lay it open without losing a page and it does not take up much counterspace.

I look forward to trying out the recipes in this book as well as creating some of my own.

Thanks Jessica, a job well done!

This is the first cookbook I've actually cooked multiple things out of! I think I've made about 35% of the recipes in the book and I've only had it a few weeks. I love the pictures, the easy read, the fact that it stays open while laying on my kitchen counter, the simple directions - I love this book! My whole family has really enjoyed the recipes that we've made from them and I love that we're getting a little extra nutrition at mealtime.

Great ideas but a bit labor intensive

I really loved the ideas of when and how to add veggies to common foods the kids eat all the time. And there are a TON of recipes, much more than the Sneaky Chef, and many different types of recipes too... however... many of the recipes require a lot of ingredients. I made one recipe and it seemed to take awhile, even though I pureed the veggies ahead of time. I did make the quesadillas though and they turned out AWESOME and my kids loved them. It's just that when I see a recipe with 20 ingredients, some of which I've never even purchased before (like flaxseed meal) it's a bit daunting. I'd definitely buy again, and will continue to try the recipes. Great for getting out of a cooking rut!

  Almost Great!

The book is great, though I can see where it could be considered a copycat book to The Sneaky Chef. This book has far more illustrations which is great for people who love to see what things look like before they eat them. The recipes are good and the kids have loved them...however the Sneaky Chef has ways to doctor products already packaged which is alot easier. Overall a good book but I invested in both books and could've stuck with The Sneaky Chef for less money and got the same recipes

I borrowed this book from a friend of mine and liked it so much that I had to buy my own. It has very good information about nutrition that your kids should be getting in their daily diet. I have 2 extremely picky eaters, and this book is helping me get veggies into their diet! yay!

I bought this cookbook for my daughter for Christmas because she asked for it. We all enjoyed looking through the book, it was cute and entertaining to read all the inserts from Jessica Seinfeld. The book is a great idea for mothers trying to make healthy tasty snacks and meals for children/husbands that are cautious of vegetables.

I bought Deceptively Delicious as I had seen Jessica Seinfeld on various talk shows and was interested in her style of cooking using pureed veggies and fruits in everyday dishes. The book describes in detail how to best prepare and puree various foods and how to store them. I've tried quite a few of the recipies and have enjoyed some more than others. The macaroni and cheese, sweet potato pancakes and hamburger recipies have been a hit while the chicken nuggets and mozarella sticks didn't go over as well. The biggest problem I have had when cooking with the purees is the food generally doesn't stick together as well (i.e. the hamburgers were kind of soggy and the coating didn't stick to the chicken nuggest). And my finished products certainly don't look as pretty as the pictrues in the book. But overall, I'm glad I purchased this cookbook as it's something different and a healthier way to cook for my family!

Bought to replace a damaged library book!

I initially checked out this book at the library, but I had a little kitchen accident and had to buy a new one to replace it. It's a great cookbook to get you thinking about how to creatively boost the nutritional content of you meals, but unless you're a real meal planner, which I'm not, Jessica's system is probably more than most busy cooks are willing to make time for.

I did try a few of the recipes. It was difficult to get past the texture of the scrambled eggs with cauliflower puree, but the applesauce muffins and the meatloaf were pretty good.

  Good sweets recipes for toddlers
Review created: 12/05/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My toddler is VERY picky and only likes fruits and sweets so I wanted something to try to hide veggies in. The brownie recipe with spinach was very good but he's even picky about sweets now so he ate them fro about 4 days and then didn't want them anymore. A good book with some creative ideas.

I decided to buy this book so I can sneak vegetables and fruits into my kids' foods. Many of the recipes featured are really simple and easy to make. Others take a little bit more time. I love the fact that the book is in spiral form. The only thing I disliked about the book was the fact that some of the recipes were a little too healthy! But overall, it is a great book to have on hand when the kids don't want to eat their veggies! It is very informative and also gives you examples of how much fruit and vegetables the kids should be eating.

  Great for ALL picky eaters!
Review created: 08/19/08

I borrowed this book from the local library and liked it so much that I checked it out a second time and finally just bought my own copy. It truly is a must have for any busy family that needs help fitting in more fruits and veggies.

I have vowed never to disclose the recipes' ingredients to either of my two children. So far, they have loved everything I have made from this book, so why spoil it? What they don't know will only make all of us healthier.

The Sunday night "puree party" makes using the recipes throughout the week very fast and convenient and the ingredients are all things that are easy to find and on our weekly list anyway. Concealing some of them just ensures that everyone will actually eat them.

Really, the only negative thing I could say about this book is that a few of the photographs make the food look less than appetizing. I counter that by simply reading the ingredient list and deciding which recipes will taste yummier than they might look and then go for it!

Enjoy!
