An appealing mix of Christmas classics and original songs, Aaron Tippin's A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER offers something for country music fans of every stripe. Those seeking the comfort of familiar standards will enjoy Tippin's takes on "Away In a Manger," "Silent Night," "Jingle Bell Rock," and the Elvis Presley classic "Blue Christmas" (on which Tippin playfully straddles the line between tribute and flat-out imitation of the King). A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER also features seven brand-new Christmas songs, most cowritten by Tippin and his wife Thea. These range from comical novelties ("It's a Good Thing Santa Ain't Single," "Mama's Getting' Ready for Christmas," "The Year That Santa Never Came") to sentimental seasonal ballads ("A December to Remember," "It's Way Too Close to Christmas to be This Far From You"). Most noteworthy are Tippin's cover of the Chuck Berry chestnut "Run Rudolph Run," on which his band cuts loose with a number of barn-burning solos, and the original "He Said That He Was Jesus," a touching account of a real-life encounter with a homeless man. Longtime Tippin fans and casual country listeners alike will find plenty to enjoy on this diverse, spirited collection.
