Album Notes Michelle DeYoung's début recording finds in her rich, shaded soprano a sympathetic and idiomatic voice for the songs of Henri Duparc and Richard Wagner. She commands both the vocal and interpretative aspects of Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder a varied group of songs that challenge the notion of "song-cycle" and thus exact particular demands on the singer-interpreter. The dramatic heft that DeYoung brings to the songs of Richard Strauss vividly recalls the young Jessye Norman, a voice akin to DeYoung's and one that excelled in this repertory. With Norman as a model, DeYoung should make more forays into the song literature of Strauss and thus build on the solid foundation of this impressive début.
