Synopsis DEATHBIRD STORIES is a series of parables about dark gods, and the rewards and penalties for negotiating with them. Some of Ellison's best work--his most powerful and painful--is included here. Written during the late '60s and early '70s, the stories tap into the tumultuous zeitgeist of the period. "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" is a response to the death of Kitty Genovese, whose brutal murder in 1964 New York City was supposedly witnessed by 38 people who did nothing to help her. "Basilisk" explores the pain and emptiness of the Vietnam War vet, wounded anew by people's utter incomprehension of what he experienced. "Along the Scenic Route," is gruesome wish-fulfillment for the aggressive highway driver. The story "Paingod"--about the moral crisis experienced by the deity responsible for causing suffering--exemplifies the truth expressed throughout this collection: if dark didn't exist, we wouldn't appreciate how glorious the light is.
