This movie was apparently popular back in the day. Crime was really big in real-life NYC, and its citizens loved to watch a character on screen who was doing something about it by taking the law into his own hands.
Here's the thing. The audiences of today don't really care. What they notice is the lack of realism in what's SUPPOSED to be a realistic film. And they also notice how unbearably ugly Charles Bronson is. I don't know if you've ever seen a Charles Bronson movie before, but it can be really painful. Each time they have a closeup, you can feel yourself losing a day off of your life. It's a ghastly and horrid experience that nobody should have to go through.
Oh, one thing of note is that this movie has a cameo from a very young Jeff Goldbloom playing a mugger. He used to be so cuuuuute!
