DN Another Note

Personally, I wouldn't recommend Death Note: Another Note to anyone who has yet to read the manga series. Although the story is explained well, and the reader is well informed as they go, I believe that this story is really only meant for Death Note fans.
The story is told in Mello's POV, and speaks of the L.A.B.B. case that L worked on a few years before Kira showed up. It centers around Naomi Masori(sp?), an FBI agent on a leave of absence.
Throughout the story Mello informs the reader about Wammy House, the orphanage L grew up in, and the expectations of the Wammy kids, including himself. It also refers to the Kira case on a few occasions, as well as the Shinigami eyes, which Beyond Birthday was born with.
The book also shows where the name Ryuzaki was first introduced to L, and gives hints as to why he later chose it as his alias. A plot twist at the end, but those who have already heard of Beyond Birthday will probably figure it out before it occurs.
Be prepared for horrible character names unfortunately, but if you get past that then its a good read for any Death Note fan.
