Synopsis Humor doesn't get any more dark or grotesque than in this sequel to DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, the second in a series starring Dexter Morgan, an extremely intelligent and well-mannered psychopath who works by day as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department...and by night as a serial killer who only targets other serial killers. Not long after the novel opens, Dexter is forced to halt his nocturnal predations to avoid alerting the suspicious Sergeant Doakes, who has taken to following Dexter everywhere. Feeling frustrated, Dexter redirects his energies toward behaving aggressively normally--including becoming increasingly romantic with his girlfriend, Rita--and the pursuit of a brutal and highly gifted (in Dexter's expert opinion, anyway) Salvadorean torturer seeking revenge in Miami.

Industry Reviews "It's the contradictions in Dexter's character that make it all work--he's smart, he's funny, he cares for children, and yet he has no normal human responses or emotions. The first book in the series, DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, was very well received; this one should be as well, and deservedly so." Publishers Weekly (05/23/2005)
"Dexter is never less than brainy, witty and macabre." Kirkus (06/01/2005)
"I honestly didn't think that Jeff Lindsay could get away with a sequel to DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER....DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER...proves me wrong....Consider...the wry satiric voice, the bizarre logic of the premise, the sheer artistry that has gone into Lindsay's delicately balanced portrait of Dexter as a cheerful lunatic." New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (07/24/2005)
"Dexter, the cheerfully sociopathic crime fighter, is one of mystery fiction's most original, compelling, and oddly endearing heroes." (starred review) Booklist - David Pitt (05/01/2005)
