I love this movie, I have watched it many times since I bought it, my husband too! It is a sensitive story, portrayed in a sensitive way, Gerard Butler was excellent as always, and Emily Mortimer as Lizzy , Jack McElhone as Frankie...all excellent! Lizzy, Frankie's Mom protects him from harsh truths in his past by "inventing" his Dad on a ship, but discovers the "invented" ship is to dock in their town, her friend Marie finds her a stranger to pretend to be his Dad for one day. I won't tell what happens, but they make you feel their joy and pain. The music, and scenery shot in Scotland is soft and beautiful. I love their Scottish accents! A fun, humorous, intelligent, beautiful, romantic story, sad in ways, but full of hope, and a huge plus for me is that it is a decent movie, I'd like more!! I may be biased because I like it so, but everyone involved in this movie gets my vote and appreciation... I can't think of anything I didn't like about it.........LOVED IT!

Great movie. I bought it because I heard it was uplifting and had a great story line. The best thing is there's no violence, sex or swearing.

The story line is beautiful. The acting is great!! Gerard Butler is at his finest playing the role of "The Stranger". Emily Mortimer is so good in the role of Frankie's mom.

This is not just a chick flick (my father loves this movie, and he's a cranky old codger at 56).

I bought this movie because it's a lovely foreign love story on what lengths a mother would go to for the love of her child. Its simplistic approach and uncomplicated storyline make it so refreshing to watch over and over again. I saw it on cable one night and everytime it came on again I watched it....that got old so I decided to try to buy it.

The acting is bar none - the storyline is mostly about little Frankie (Jack McElhone) writing letters to his dad, whom he thinks is in the Navy overseas - but his real dad is not in his life anymore (I'll let the movie tell you why) and he's REALLY getting his letters responded to by his mom (Emily Mortimer).

The love interest is Gerard Butler - I have to say if you've never read his bio on the internet somewhere, please do - he is an accomplished actor as well as an impressive human being. Dear Frankie is a hard movie to find anyway, so when I found it on eBay, I paid some $$$ to get it. It was worth the investment especially if you're into foreign films, accents, and the like.

I love this movie.

I purchased the DVD movie, "Dear Frankie" because I like the acting of Gerard Butler, and this is a poignant family story. It was not a movie that was widely distributed and the DVD was sold in limited quantities a couple of years ago but seems to be out of stock in local stores now. I can find almost anything I need on EBay and was happy to find this DVD and purchase it.
For those who like the Hollywood "glitz" in movies such as riveting drama, or striking cinematography, this DVD may be considered less colorful, and slow moving. It was also filmed in another country, and would not take on a local flair.
However,I found it was a relaxing, sweet story, about a "lovable" deaf child who yearns for a father that he never had, a single mom who is devoted to her child and concerned for his happiness, and quiet, gentle man, who finds that his "arranged" relationship for one day with them becomes so much more.
It's not a "blockbuster" but a "feel good" movie worth watching.

i bought this film because Gerard Butler is in it. What I found is a good story about a mother and her son and her way of showing her love for her son. I wanted the movie to end differently. Not an award winner but a nice movie for a rainy day.

I found this to be a very touching story. A mother running away from an abusive husband and having to face her problems. Then finding a father for her deaf son. There is quite a twist if how this is done. Very human situations. Tender and emotional.

  A Sweet Film

I really enjoyed this movie. The casting was excellent. Gerard Butler does a wonderful job as the stoic man moved by the plight of a fatherless boy. Emily Mortimer is excellent as Frankie's mother, a caring woman who makes a tough choice and then has to deal with the consequences that later arise. And Jack McElhone, as Frankie, brings life and depth to a character who, though unable to speak, indeed speaks volumes. An unforgettable film, Dear Frankie is heartwarming and uplifting.

What a lovely film. Shame it was not well-promoted or known when in theater release. (At least to our knowledge). Absolutely stunning everything. PLUS...it is a great family film without violence or sex (just a bit of profaniity), & there are more than a few surprising twists in the plot that demand another viewing to gain the scope of the story. You will watch this movie again & again...and have the tissue box handy...even for you boys & men (well maybe your shirt sleeve, when nobody is looking)!!

This movie was totally unexpected. It is very heart warming and sad and happy all at the same time. I cried the whole way through. Gerard Butler does a magnificent job in this movie and really brings it all together. Even if you don't buy the movie please at least rent it.

Gerard Butler, Phamthom of the Opera, Dracula 2000, Timeline. This is a wonderful heartwarming story, not just a chick flick (Gerry is gorgeous!) My Husband thoroughly enjoyed it also. All wonderful actors, especially Frankie, a little deaf boy looking for his Father. Not real corny but a beautiful story, I highly recommend it to all!

Loved the movie. Love Gerry Bultler. I first rented the movie at my local library; then purchased it on ebay. Be sure the DVD is Region 1 (U.S format)and not produced in the other countries such as the United Kingdon.

After getting used to the heavy accents the movie draws you in. You come to love each of the characters and genuinely care about the outcome. And then - all of a sudden...the credits are rolling. We did not care for the ending AT ALL.

I bought it as a gift and intend to buy one for myself. I rented this movie and was completely taken by the story, the actors, the music, the scenery - essentially everything. I highly recommend this film. It has so many interesting themes that ultimately weave together by the end in a very positive way. Also, Gerard Butler is exceptionally hot.

  pleasant movie

I'm mostly writing this because my home page is asking for a review. It's a pleasant movie, worth watching. This would be fine to watch with the family. The Gerard Butler role seemed a little phoned in to me (and I'm a fan). That role particularly seemed a bit underwritten. Over all it was a nice movie and I advise seeing it.

I never got a chance to see this movie because the seller did not mention that this DVD was from another region. Everytime I tried to play the dvd a notice would pop on the screen stating that I could not play the dvd cause it was of another region. I am highly disappointed. I spent my money and I was really looking forward to watching this movie. I never knew that dvd's had regions, I always thought that dvd's were dvd's and they could be played any where. I really regret buying this item for two reasons, one--I can't watch it and two I wasted my money.

My husband and I saw reviews for "Dear Frankie" and we wanted to watch it, but none of the rental places in our area carried it. So, I went on line to search for the best price to buy it and found it on eBay at a good price. I believe it shipped out of Thailand. It had different choices of subtitles but once you got it set up for English, etc., it viewed beautifully. We have watched in twice in a short time! Excellent condition and speedy delivery!
No complaints!

This is a very good movie although it is very hard to understand the thick, scottish accent. Gerard Butler is a wonderful actor and the ending is very nice.
