Synopsis
DEAR AMERICAN AIRLINES is a novel posing as a letter of grievance and outrage to American Airlines whose flight delays have prevented the novel's protagonist, Benjamin R. Ford, from giving away his daughter at her lesbian wedding--another failure in the long litany of failures that make up Benjamin's life. As he sits and fumes in the interminable sterility of the airport terminal, Ford reflects on the wreckage of his life--his alcoholism, his insane mother, his ruined relationship a poet who failed to save him from drink--as well as the equally tragic life of the one-legged Polish soldier in the novel he is translating. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of 2008.

Publisher's Note
Traveling to the wedding of his estranged daughter and left stranded in O'Hare Airport when his flight is cancelled, Bennie Ford, a fifty-three-year-old failed poet and translator, begins writing a letter of complaint to the airline that evolves into a painful lament for a life that has gone badly awry. A first novel. Simultaneous.

Industry Reviews
"I normally don't like narratives marinated in alcohol and self-pity, but here it works because Benjamin isn't macho about his drinking, and because the tragic details are grounded by brutal honesty and leavened by humor."
