The third, and possibly final, season of HBO's critically acclaimed Deadwood had it's share of slow moving moments to be sure, but the series as a whole lived up to the excellent precedent set by the previous two seasons of the show. As the third season opens, sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) makes a run for re-election, which gets side tracked by forging an uneasy alliance with Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) against the vendictive George Hearst (Gerald McRaney) who comes to the camp with some deadly plans for everyone involved. The lives of newly weds Alma Garret (Molly Parker) and Whitney Ellsworth (Jim Beaver), as well as Sol (John Hawkes) and Trixie (Paula Malcomson) are in jeopardy as Hearst prepares to wreak bloody havoc, which is mainly what this season of the series is focused on. Also during this season, we witness the recovery of Cy (Powers Boothe), as well as bonding between Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) and Joanie (Kim Dickens), and the debilitating health of Doc Cochran (Brad Dourif). If you've been a fan of the show for some time, you know what to expect with Deadwood in terms of it's vulgarity and violence, so if you're new to the show, you won't really be won over by anything here. That being said, the third season of Deadwood is some truly great TV regardless, and the ensemble cast as usual is superb; with Olyphant, McShane, and McRaney being the best of the bunch. As the previous reviewer stated, if this is indeed the final season of the show with no other kind of resolution, there isn't any real cliffhanger that leaves the viewer cursing at the screen (a la Carnivale). That being said, hopefully this isn't the last hurrah for Deadwood, and there will be another chapter before these characters ride off into the sunset

Ebay allows thieving seller to steal my money!!!!!!!!!!
Review created: 09/07/07

Deadwood is awesome but I never received this dvd set. I sent my money order and the next day, this auction completely disappeared from my ebay summary with no explination from ebay, no contact from the seller. Luckly I had copied down the item number before hand (just a habit) and when I typed it into the search box, I got the response that it was incorrect. All of a sudden that auction never existed and my money was gone. So, who is liable for an auction that never existed? And now. a few months after the fact, I get asked to write a review for an auction that never happened according to ebay, that I happened to get ripped off on, WTF? This is insane.... I did not bother to file with Ebay because of the nifty scam about being a purchase under twenty five dollars, so once again, I'm just one of those little people out here who got screwed by a now "no longer registered seller" and you "eBay" who does nothing to protect your best customers. Shame on you! Shame on you All! Do you not make enough money off of us to actually do something about these sellers? You do collect financial informail about them when they agree to become sellers, why can we not get our money back when the seller has clearly defrauded their customers? Why do you delete an auction with no notice and act like it never existed? You let these people walk away everyday! Paypal (also owned by eBay) lets the same thin happen as well, at their discretion they decide what will be the best resolution to a claim and then turn around and thank you for making the decision! I have really seen too many injustices to sit here and not speak out on this. How dare you have me write a review on something I paid for and never recieved. Nothing bad about Deadwood it is a wondeful show. Ebay on the otherhand really could have done something to protect the buyers in this situation, we couldn't even leave feedback. The listing was just GONE! I don't know whose desk this seller was under but he must have sucked a mean one.

I always liked Deadwood, it is a bit raw as western goes but good entertainment. My husband comes from South Dakota and he and I visited the present day Deadwood a couple of years ago.

The acting is worth the price of the DVDs.

I just love this show. And I hate HBO for screwing it up! But I now have all three seasons on DVD and can watch them whenever I want. By the way, I cancelled HBO.

This should still be on TV

I am still in shock that this series was not renewed. Yes the language was rough, but after watching the extras in all the seasons it was an accurate description of the life and people of the time. The characters were based on real people and they were brought to life on the screen. I wish they would have done another season of this instead of trying to milk every last idea out of the Sopranos which failed miserably in the last season.
My questions are after the election what happened and who is the next visitor to the pigs.

I gave this as a gift to my husband for Christmas. He has always been a history buff so this was a perfect fit. This show offfers a glimpse into what life was like during America's westward expansion in the late 1800's as territories became states. The best series HBO has created since Sopranos. I'm sorry it is no longer on the air.

This series keeps you glued to the television set!! It has twists and turns and leaves you wanting for more. It has strong language, it is not meant for the younger audience. But you will not regret buying Deadwood. We own each season and can't wait for the next to come out!!!

THIS WAS A REAL, RAW, GRITTY TALE OF HOW THE OL WEST CAME TO BE AND A GREAT SHOW TO WATCH.

I WAS SICKENED TO HEAR THAT IT WAS NOT BEING PICKED UP FOR ANOTHER SEASON SO THE WRITER COULD WORK ON ANOTHER SHOW THAT BOMBED MISERABLE. THIS WAS A WINNER AND I NEEDED TO OWN IT.

A FRIEND SAID HE STARTED WATCHING IT AND WHEN I SAW THE THIRD SEASON IN THE VIDEO STORE I DECIDED TO RENT IT. AFTER WATCHING A FEW EPISODES DECIDED TO START WITH SEASON ONE TO GET TO KNOW THE CHARACTERS AND GET A FEEL FOR THE STORY. WHEN I SAW IT WAS $85.00 AT BEST BUY, DECIDED TO GO ON EBAY AND ENDED UP WITH ALL 3 SEASONS. NOW MY HUSBAND IS HOOKED TOO. WE JUST COMPLETED THE SECOND SEASON. YOU CAN WATCH EACH EPISODE SEVERAL TIMES AND FIND SOMETHING YOU MISSED. WE LOVE THE BLACK HILLS AND IT'S HISTORY. ONCE YOU GET PASSED THE LANGUAGE YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH DEADCWOOD, IT'S PEOPLE AND IT'S SCENERY. DISAPPOINTED THAT THERE IS ONLY THREE SEASONS, HOPEFULLY HBO WILL FOLLOW UP MOVIE.

We had not heard of "Deadwood" before but spotted it at our local video shop. Thought we would give it a watch for something a bit different & as it was an HBO series, thought it must be good. We hired the first 2 seasons & were hooked. Its like "Sopranos" but set in the wild west. Were unable to locate a copy of the 3rd season from our videoshop so we purchased it ourselves as we couldn't wait to find out what happens...

This DVD set came in a "Collector's Edition" packaging, which is REALLY NICE! It came factory sealed, in perfect condition. I've had the set for a few weeks now, and am enjoying it immensely! I am a DEADWOOD fan, and have watched the whole series over and over again, and I still find new and interesting details every time I watch it. Everything about this DEADWOOD set is supurb, the quality is first rate, and I highly recommend it to anyone. I feel really good about the low price I paid for such a high-end product. I could not have purchased this at the $100 price that HBO is still selling it for!

Deadwood, as good as any movie currently being made
Review created: 09/07/07

Deadwood, like many of the other made for TV series such as The Wire, Rome and others are better entertainment than most of the movies coming out. I purchased this third season to go with the other seasons previously purchased. To me a good show is like a good book and rereading or in this case rewatching it always brings out the good points and you appreciate things that you did not notice in previous viewings.
I grew up watching westerns on TV and in the movies and still enjoy them. Deadwood takes it liberties, but delivers a believable story with great acting. I like the way Deadwood developed it characters and the way the "white hats and the black hats" were united to fight off a common foe.
My only disappointment is that the show has ended. I is my hope that Deadwood will have a movie, simular to what they did with Firefly, to close the door on this series.

  Fantastic Show
Review created: 09/06/07

This show is one of the most raw shows that was on television since OZ. It makes you feel like this is really how people lived during that period. It is not a John wayne western were everyone is happy at the end. Every character at one time was polarized against one another during th shows time on the air. GREAT SHOW!!!

Historically perfect, down to the smallest details.A mixture of real life and fictitious characters. If you object to profanity, stay away. That's the way it was and that's the way it is shown. The whole Deadwood series is totally addictive.

  Deadwood third season DVD set

This is truely an entertaining set of DVD's. I love the Deadwood characters and storyline. Never a dull moment! I have the first two seasons of Deadwood already, and tend to watch episodes here and there as time allows. The beauty of owning the set is that you can review any of the previous episodes to refresh your memory, and then watch the next one. I recommend this set of DVD's for anyone who loves Deadwood, especially for those who may not be able to catch it on T.V.

  An exceptionally life-changing work
Review created: 08/29/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Deadwood" either is your cup of tea or isn't, and if it isn't, then you probably have no business even considering prchasing these DVDs; the third season in't gonna change your mind. If it IS your cup of tea, and you're just wondering whether or not the third season meets the high marks set by the first two seasons, allow me to answer: it does. In some cases, it even surpasses them.

The third season finds the camp in a general tizzy about the upcoming elections for mayor and sheriff, and Al Swearengen in a bit more specific tizzy about the impact the arrival of George Hearst has had on his life and livelihood. In a sense, the entire season is about the power play between these two titans, with Cy Tolliver trying to edge himself into the mix somewhere and Seth Bullock trying to figure out what his place is in the whole mess.

Amongst the other plot threads explored in this season: Jane's growing friendship with the increasingly troubled Joanie Stubbs; Alma's opening a Deadwood bank; the feud between Steve and Hostetler; the oddly touching relationship between Trixie and Sol; Elsworth's marriage to Alma, which may not prove to be the bed of roses he had hoped for; the appearance in town of the Earp brothers, and of a troupe of actors; and, of course, Seth Bullock's ever-present willingness to be grumpy with the wrong person, Farnum's weasly nature, and Merrick's desire to write about it all.

The plots don't matter much, though. The dialogue and the acting are what make this show great. "Deadwood," in its three seasons, had so many iconic moments that it makes most other shows look like film-school projects in comparison.

In addition to the regular cast standouts -- Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, W. Earl Brown, William Sanderson, Brad Dourif, Molly Parker, Powers Boothe, Robin Weigert, and so on, ALL of whom do Emmy-caliber work -- I think special mention needs to go to Gerald McRaney, who turned up right at the end of season two but becomes an integral character in the third. His portrayal of Hearst is just awesome. Not that he's better than anyone else on the show; he just immediately fits in with the tone of the show, so much so that it really feels as if his character had been there all along, lurking in the shadows somewhere.

Much has been written about the fact that HBO decided to cancel the series, and pretty unexpectedly; but don't fret too much about the show ending on a cliffhanger. Not all plot points are resolved, but there is at least a sort of closure; it's like the first two seasons, where it feels as if a chapter has ended, but the novel will continue. Well, it looks like the novel WON'T be continuing -- HBO has claimed that there will be two two-hour movies to wrap things up, but no filming dates seem to have been set, and it's been months since anyone had anything to say about that project -- but if the series has to end with the close of the third season, I won't feel as if I was cheated too terribly badly. I'd prefer it had run for ten or twelve years, but hey, we're lucky the doggone thing ever even got made.

Great series. I hated that they ended with the Third Season and never had a movie to give it a end and not leave you hanging. But that is the way a lot of companies do. ABC did it to Men in Trees, another one that I really liked.
