Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (2008, Paperback)

I purchased this book upon seeing the first episode of HBOs' True Blood, which is taken from the Sookie Stackhouse book series. This first book in the series did not disappoint. It is an easy read, of around 300 pages. There is a real feel for the setting, and the characters, full of mystery, romance and humor.
As a 'True Blood' viewer I prefer the on-screen character development of the 2 leads, but I feel this novel is essential for those watching this first season of the series, to see where the similarities and differences lie between both tales. I find myself going back to the novel, because it's fun to see where you think the story may be going, once characters do things differently than what is on the page.
If you enjoy fantasy and romance, as well as vampires and mythology, you will be intrigued by this book.

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I WAS SO ADDICTED TO THE HBO SERIES "TRUE BLOOD". I READ THE BOOK IN LESS THAN A WEEK - I COULD NOT PUT IT DONE. I AM NOT A "BIG READER" BUT I LOVED THIS BOOK AND IT KEPT MY FULL ATTENTION FROM BEGINNING TO END. IT WAS A WONDERFUL MIXTURE OF LOVE, MYSTERY, SMALL TOWN DRAMA, AND PLENTY OF ACTION. I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. IN COMPARISON TO THE TV SERIES - I THOUGHT THE FIRST BOOK WAS MUCH BETTER. I HAVE ALMOST FINISHED THE SECOND ONE NOW AND IT IS JUST AS GOOD.

All I can say is wow. I LOVE the series True Blood on HBO but this book is truely better than the series. The series did give the characters a face that you could love for the book and it makes you love Bill even more. The sex is hot, the excitment is better than ever. If you love a good vampire book with mystery you will love this one. I never even expected who done it, I read the entire book in one day. I look forward to reading the rest of the series along with watching True Blood.

A fun read--Sookie Stackhouse, our protagonist, is a quirky, funny waitress in a bar in Louisiana.
She is also telepathic--a gift that she calls her 'disability'.
She is also in love with Bill--a Vampire.

There are murders, family issues, a might-be-Elivis Vampire, love and loss in this book.
While this book isn't one of the best I've ever read, I'm going to read the other Sookie Stackhouse books, 'cuz I just really like that Vampire-lovin' girl.

Love it!! Great Book, I was hooked on the twilight series and needed more Vampire. This book filled that void and kept me turning page after page even when my eyes where closing. The characters were believable and the way that the Vampires were portrayed was very realistic too.

This book is awesome! I purchased it because of all the hype surrounding the True Blood TV series and was not disappointed. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Love it so far. I'm not done with it yet but i cant seem to put it down. A must read for anyone who likes vampire stories or love stories. It is intreaguing and interesting. Glad i bought it. This is the first book in the "Sookie Stackhouse" series by Charlaine Harris. And this is the book that got me addicted to them. When I purchased and subsequently received this book, I got exactly what was represented in the description of the item, and as quickly as possible.

I love everything about this book!!!! This thriller will put on the edge of your seat thru out the whole thing and it will suck you in!!!!

For anyone who loves mystery, vampires, and romance! The adult version of twilight for sure, it's very funny and captivating! You wanting to keep reading this book until you are done and then some!! loove it! gonna definitely get the next!

The read itself was quick and easy. It is a very straight forward book but it does lack the action and suspense as the True Blood show. This is actually the first time I'd have to say that the show is better than the book. The book is completely different from the show. All of the outcomes are the same but they happen differently. There's less drama and some characters from the show are also missing from the book. It was almost like someone read the book and was like "Hey, I can do better" and made the series out of it. It brought back some of the show imagery but the only reason to read this book is if you're interested in how different the story line really is from the show. A pleasant and simple book to read though.

Although I'm not fond of mystery novels and vampire stories (this was my first), this was pretty good. Entertaining, exciting, funny and romatic at the same time. (What else would a girl need?) :)
The plot was rather simple, - small town, mind-reader waitress Sookie falls for a newly "legalised" cool vampire "back in town", their love blossoms slowly, while nearly the whole town is against their relationship and mysterious murders scare the dwellers, but finally Sookie solves the mystery and they could live happily ever after... if Bill, the vampire wasn't already dead. :)
So basically quite usual stuff: romance and murder, spiced with some unusual: vampires. However, I liked Harris's style anyway.
Definitely I'm not going to be a Sookie Stackhouse fan, as Harris wrote a series of her adventures, but I would recommend this novel to girls and women who are romantic, but not in a pink, syrupy way.

I decided to read the book as I saw episodes of the series "True Blood" on HBO (based on this novel) which seemed to be quite interesting, BUT I can tell you: the book is far more better.

I brought this book after seeing the TrueBlood series on HBO. Once I starting reading, I couldn't put the book down. Once I finish read Dead until Dark, I went out and brought books 2 - 7. Can't wait til the new season start on TrueBlood.
