Dead Calm (DVD, 1999)

I was thinking of a movie I saw a few months back. Dead Calm, starring Billy Zane, Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill. Seeing a young and pretty Nicole in a very dynamic role with a brutally handsome Billy Zane brings this to one of my favorite movies. Billy was so psychopathic and domineering, Nicole trying to keep her composure during certain suspenseful moments. The tension between them makes you feel as if you are in the same room, breathing in the salty sea air and feeling his sweat dripping on you at every swipe he takes at Nicole. There was a certain fire in both of their eyes and their chemistry worked. She gives herself to him in an effort to mislead him and she looks directly at us during that time. You can almost feel her burning gaze, feeling her revulsion, or is she feeling some sort of excitement as well? Sam Neill, the diligent husband, he has his own troubles out in the water, basically being stranded on a sinking ship, trying desperately to talk to his lady love via a cb radio that is just barely working. You can almost feel the desperation running through you as she desperately tries to talk to him. I feel this is a very fine movie, with excellent characters, the actors were on point and I recommend this movie to anyone who is a Billy Zane, Nicole Kidamn or Sam Neill fan.

I decided to buy this movie because I wanted to further my collection and I remember it from years ago when they used to show it all the time on cable. It's a cool suspenseful movie with good acting and even better cinematography the accents kind of got on my nerves but Nicole Kidman is very cool and Sam Neil is adorable. I didn''t buy the sex scene though because I always thought Billy Zane was gay and he doesn't do a very good job of hiding it especially in "Titanic" he seemed like he was more attracted to Leonardo Dicaprio. And it bothered me when the dog got killed because I'm an animal lover but I guess someone has to die right all in all good film

I never received a full address to send money order for the item I purchased. Therefore I never received my item. I had emailed the seller numerous times, and I Never had any kind of reply. The seller did take money orders I had checked before I decided to bid on that item. Bad communication.

I was looking through some titles of movies that I haven't seen in years.
This prompted me to purchase this and I'm very happy that I did. It was
received in good condition and shipped quickly.

This film is a sleeper. What I mean is it didn't get near the hype that it should have. You will not sleep though during this one. It is suspense almost from the beginning and keeps getting better to the very end. Kidman is great, one of if not the earliest of films. Get this one and you won't be sorry.

I like this movie a lot. In my opinion it is a first rate thriller with an excellent cast. That is why it is disappointing that Warner Brothers made such a lousy transfer. All the low light shots are full of grain to the point that it is not only noticeable but is a distraction. Much of the film, the daylight shots, are acceptable. But in today's world of digital and high definition this transfer comes up woefully short. I looked up a disc review and the author warned of problems. But since that is their job to be critical I figured that I wouldn't be so picky. It turns out he was right. This film deserved so much more than it recieved. It's a shame that we have to pass on a film we really like because of quality issues.

A young Nicole Kidman stars in this 1989 thriller as Rae Ingram. She is the wife of John Ingram (Sam Neill), a captain in the Australian navy, who has been summoned home after the death of their baby son in an automobile wreck. To recover, the couple take a cruise on their private sailing boat. They are very much in love and are coping well despite their loss.

And then they sight a dinghy approaching their ship from a schooner far off in the distance. It is a weary male (Billy Zane) with very few belongings. As he begs for fresh water, he explains that he is Hughie Warriner, the sole survivor of the boat where everyone else ate contaminated salmon and died.

As Hughie takes a nap, John looks through Hughie's belongings and suspects something different. Taking the dinghy over to the schooner after locking Hughie in one of the bedrooms, he starts looking around. But when he looks up, Sam sees his boat being hijacked by Hughie and heading in a different direction with Rae trying her best to stop it.

From there, this movie becomes a thriller to the utmost. It is Nicole Kidman's movie as she tries to figure out how to rescue her husband and stop Hughie's hijacking of the boat. We are sitting on the edge of our seats for the rest of the movie worried about Rae and their little schnauzer dog Ben. It is a wild ride with twists and turns galore. You will have to watch this movie to see how it all unravels.

I highly recommend this movie!

The movie is in good condition which is all that I can ask. The movie did seem to take awhile to arrive though. The price was reasonable just the same, and it was easier than going out and TRYING to find it.

I didn't receive this dvd, but saw the movie years ago. That's why I wanted to own it. Great story, well acted and beautiful locations. I'd highly recommend this movie.

Now this is a good older movie with too good stars and a good looking villian. It only a few characters, but it was an attention grabber and worth the money to buy. I liked the plot, but wonder why they didn't have a radio to call the coast guard. She was able to contact him, so why not someone to help them?

I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie at all. Great response time and communication from seller.

I saw this movie when I was 9 years old up at my Dad's house. Pretty good movie. I wanted it. Looked it up. Bought it. Laughed at the end when Billy Zane Opens Wide!!! Won't spoil it for Ya!!!

This is a very suspensful movie, Nicole Kidman was very good as the first-mate who had to deal with this maniac Billy Zane. Sam Neil gives a solid praformance in this film. I found this movie very disturbing when I first saw it; therefore, I must give it a better than average rating.

From the beginning shows commitment couple have for each other.Carries this through tough drama,seperation & eventual bringing couple together again.Great Cast who portray roles very well.

Great spell binding movie keeps you on the edge of your seat. Always something happening. Very exciting ending.
