Much like Bad Taste (See my other reviews for more info) Dead Alive (AKA Brain Dead) is one of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's earlier films, showcasing a horror themed plot inundated with outlandish gore effects. Also similar to other Jackson horror fare, the movie pokes fun at itself and the gore genre by using complete ridiculousness. The level of absurdity builds throughout the film, reaching a climax with the resurrection of the mother toward the end. There's a hilarious bit involving a lawn mower as well. If you can appreciate the self-deprecating nature of a film that doesn't take itself seriously at all, and demonstrates that by almost caricature-like explosions of bodily fluids, you will certainly enjoy Dead Alive.
