In an age where everything — cars, information, adolescence, theatrical release windows — has been sped up to a startling degree, it stands to reason that even the pop-cultural symbol of torpidity, the zombie, would find its inner Carl Lewis. But while there has recently been a rash of films featuring zombies capable of running an undeniably fleeter 40 than possible in previous incarnations, it's important to give credit where credit is due by remembering that the sprinting dead concept was invented more than two decades ago by schlockmeister supreme Umberto Lenzi in Nightmare City (1980). What's more, his zombies could operate firearms, too. Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead has none of that film's ludicrous ingenuity, and, at worst, no particular reason for being. But it does gain a good deal of forward momentum in its slam-bang early going, which, for a while, goes a long way toward concealing the movie's thorough pointlessness. In fact, the film is never better than in its opening ten minutes of expertly staged mayhem wherein Ana (Sarah Polley), a young, overworked nurse, returns home after a grueling day of work, goes to bed with her boyfriend, and wakes up to a bona fide zombie holocaust. Her boyfriend is quickly, brutally dispatched and, just as quickly, joins the ranks of the undead in pursuit of her and every other sentient living thing. Without pause, Ana flees the suburbs, encountering sundry visions of hell before crashing her car and getting rescued by Kenneth (Ving Rhames), a behemoth of a man with little use for words or the company of others. Nonetheless, they band together, meeting up with another cluster of strangers along the way before reaching the shopping mall in which they hope to take refuge. Unfortunately, the complex is already home to a small group of gun-toting redneck security guards who'd rather not share their relative good fortune any further. Though they're soon overpowered, matters are quickly complicated by the arrival of more survivors, some of whom are wounded and close to death. Realizing that, without preemptive action, there will soon be zombies amongst them, impossibly tough decisions must be made which threaten to upset the tenuous harmony barely keeping these diverse individuals from each others' throats.

Better than expected for a remake

Given that horror films, and zombie films in particular, are what they are, remakes are usually abyssmal. The update of Dawn of the Dead was a pleasant surprise. As a fan of the original, I expected this to be wretched. Instead, it's a different look at similar themes for a new generation who would be turned off by the extremely dated look of the first Dawn of the Dead. The only solid plot element shared is the mall--other than that, the characters are new and modern and have growth arcs. You hate some, they die. You like some, they die. The only thing that gave me trouble initially was that we were asked to put ourselves in a world where no zombie film was ever made; when the characters are bewildered by what is happening and have to figure out how to kill zombies for the first time, seasoned zombage vets will roll their eyes. Take that into account watching this and it's not a bad entry into the genre. Top grade actors ensure decent performances and some of the cinematography is super. If you like Jake Weber from TV's Medium, especially take a look at this film. He plays, well, he plays Jake Weber. But so very well. And Ving Rhames of course plays what he usually does, to perfection. Sarah Polley also puts in a solid turn as the sort of character you'd expect but the side characters really spice up the basic ensemble nicely. Dawn '04 takes itself fairly seriously but it does it with decent grace and at least never insults you.

Zombies in a shopping mall!?! Think that Sounds dumb? You're right. Call it a sequel and you can get people to pay to see this tripe.

I loved this movie since I first saw it. The un-rated version is even better. The special features on this dvd are really cool. The "zombie news report" is really funny. It's almost like a real news report. Plus the "lost video" of Andy who owns a gun store.
There wasn't anything I disliked about it. I thought the whole dvd, movie and features were really cool. If your a horror movie fan, this movie is for you. I highly recommend the un-rated directors cut.

One of the best zombie movies in the last several decades. Horror, with some comedy thrown in, as well as hundreds of blood hungry zombies. This is a must have for any zombie movie lover, and a must have for every DVD collection.

well let me say folks i still love the original movie the best but this one comes damn close. the directors cut is the way to go. i think zach snyder did a slam bang job! if you are a true dawn/zombie fan you will love this movie. even if you have to watch it a couple of times to let it sink in! four and a half stars out of five for this baby! awesome. scary. well plotted! give it a whirl and see for yourself!

I bought this movie for my husband. He likes horror movies. I did sit and watch this with him. I usually don't watch horror, but I did watch this one and it was pretty good. It only made me jump a few times. In terms of scarey that would be good. It's hard for me to review horror because I don't watch alot of horror movies but if you want a movie that is scarey, thisis it.

  Fast Zombies Suck!!
Review created: 02/15/09

This remake is entertaining. I did see it when it first came out on the big screen. It did hold my attention. I guess I would call myself a George Romero Zombie purist. Zombies should not run! Fast Zombies suck! Also compared to the original where you had 4 main characters, this movie had too many to count. For the most part I wanted to see them all get eaten alive. Some were truely annoying. I also did not see the need for a sex sceen(although brief) in a zombie movie. Had to see this movie because of its name. It did not entertain as much as the original. I would not buy the DVD but I would watch it on cable again if I had nothing else to do.

Review created: 01/04/09

Intense movie and good actors. just wanted to add it to my collection, not a great movie but good to have in the collection. Good movie the first time you watch it and then not so good the 2nd time and by the third or fourth time it justs sits there for a year. So Good 1st timer if your a collector like myself with upwards of 2000 dvds you cant beat the price!!

  No More Room In Hell!
Review created: 01/03/09

The film's relentlessly disturbing and innovative gore effects are one reason to see DAWN OF THE DEAD, but those who can stomach the endless barrage of blood and gnarled zombie faces will be rewarded--and possibly surprised--by what the film says about human nature and life within a consumer-based culture. Any aficionado of horror is likely to place the film high on their list of revered cinema.

When I first saw the movie I had the mentality of the original zombie movies in my mind. I literally jumped when I saw the zombies sprinting and immediately knew this was going to be different than any other one. I give it 5 stars as a movie in whole. It was a great movie but it seemed more 'actiony' then most zombie movies.

  Dawn of the Dead
Review created: 06/06/07

I bought this movie because it has been one of the first zombies movies that was actually scary. I love zombies and everything about them. I believe an zombie outbreat could happen. People laugh but the science is getting to the point that the dead may not rise, but people may be infected by something manmade and exhibit zombie signs.IE 28 days later. But I didn't like this movie because of zombies, but because of the survival aspect. I ask people what they would do is such an out break happen. Many didn't know what to do. So this is a great movie on such a inciden that could happen and look how people act and how they survivie. This movie does mimic people reactions. I bought this movie because I could not find it for sale anywhere and Online renting just wasn't going to do it. So enjoy this movie and just imagine if something like this happened. You have to ask yourself, where would you go, what would you do, how will you survive. Otherwise you may just add to the undead numbers and roam the earth till you rot away. I hope you see another aspect of this movie now.
