  Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible

In golf you might use a driver maybe 14 times in a round but you'll use your short irons at least 4 times as often. Its a fact that a bad short game (within 100 yards of the pin) will add lots of extra strokes to your rounds right up there with three putts. Dave spent years following pro's on the PGA tour taking notes of what club they were using, how accurate their shots were and how far they hit each club. Using his twenty plus years of working for NASA as a physicist he came up with a system to help us average weekend warriors improve our game and lower our handicaps. Its well known that even with all the technological improvements with golf clubs handicaps have improved less than one stroke in the past 25 years. Utilizing Dave's short game system will help you lower your scores and thus your handicap. The book can be a bit of a hard read. You can tell rather quickly Dave's science background. There's a lot of numbers, charts and analysis throughout the book. But if you can read through this, your game will be the better for it. Having read the book and I'd already been keeping stats on my game (drive distance, fairways hit, up and downs, greens in regulation, distance of first putt and how many to hole out, etc.) I found my game improved by 6 strokes within 5 weeks of play and practice. Now I consistently break 100. I'm hoping that rereading it, keeping notes this time for use at the range, that I can finally break 90 on a more regular basis. Plus I intend to get his putting bible so that the dreaded three putt will no longer be a part of my game. Because if it works as well for my putting as the short game bible did for playing within a hundred yards of the pin breaking 80 will not be an unrealistic or unattainable goal.

After about the 100th time a friend recommended this book, I finally broke down and bought it. It is a surprisingly good read for a golf book :) More importantly it does a great job of explaining the short game to the amateur... a MUST for any aspiring golfer.

The best and most comprehensive of it's kind

As I approach middle age, like all golfers before me, I'm not nearly so long with my wood and irons as I used to be. And, like everyone else my age, I want to score as well, or nearly so, as I did when I was in my thirties and forties, even if it is from the middle tees rather than from the tips.

You know, we've always heard about the short game (putting, pitching, chipping) spoken of as the "scoring" game, as that part of golf least practiced by the "weekend golfer" but ironically, the part most likely to have a positive effect upon his score.

After reading this marvelous book by Dave Pelz, which covers all aspects of the the short game as mentioned above, I can tell you that everything we've heard over the years about the correlation between improving your short game and it's very happy effect on your scoring is absolutely true. I say this because, after reading Mr. Pelz's book, and following his techniques and suggestions, my score fell 4 strokes over the last 3 months and is still getting better. Now, mind you, it took dedicated study and practice to achieve this improvement but it was so worth it, so gratifying.

Dave Pelz writes in a familiar and interesting way that is readily understood by the reader and I cannot recommend his book more highly. If you want your putts to roll more accurately, your pitches to land close to the flagstick rather than short, to stop "chili-dipping" or "skulling" your chips, do yourself a favor and buy this masterpiece.

I'm not quite finished with the book, but using some of Pelz's ideas I have saved some shots around the greens!

  Short Game Bible

Great book. Been practicing 7:30 9:00 and 10:30 golf swings. I have gone from shanking the ball to hitting all greens pitching and chipping from 110 yards and closer in the last three weeks. Reading bump and run and sandtraps. The statistics are interesting but can be mind boggling. I practice 40 minutes to a couple of hours 4 days a week. What an improvement on my chipping, pitching and putting. The short game is really important to the whole game.
