Synopsis
In an effort to present a unifying theory of the natural world, DARWIN'S BLIND SPOT looks to the concept of symbiosis, the way in which differing species will create mutually beneficial relationships, as its foundation. Ryan, a British physicist, takes Darwin and his follows to task for ignoring Nature, arguing that evolution is only one strand in an intricate web of forces working in relation to sustain life.

Publisher's Note
The true wonder of evolution's creativity can be appreciated only by combining Darwin's ideas of natural selection with a force he overlooked: symbiosis. The time has come for the idea of--selection of the fittest--to share the stage. Frank Ryan, a scientist, physician, and author, whose previous books have been greeted with acclaim, writes that Darwin blundered when he did not heed the role played by interactions among species in explaining the diversity and wonder of life. Showing that gigantic leaps in evolution have arisen from the blending of life forms, Ryan gives many examples of symbiosis, such as human cells' utter dependence on agents that originated in ancient bacteria and the inability of flowering plants to reproduce without bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. He explores the possibility that sex began as cannibalism between microbes and notes that our bodies contain twenty times more living bacteria than human cells. And Ryan doesn't shy away from controversy: he believes that people are becoming more cooperative with one another--a societal form of evolution related to symbiosis, he says.
