The seminal Florida death metal band Obituary returned in 2009 with its eighth studio album. Though ferocious as ever, Obituary sound musically reinvigorated on DARKEST DAYS, allowing the tightly honed chops they developed through the years to truly shine. Drummer Donald Tardy clearly anchors the band, shifting from precision blast beats to genuine grooves. While metalheads will have no trouble banging away to tracks such as "Payback" and "Blood to Give," DARKEST DAYS isn't merely an album of sonic extremes (though it's certainly ton-of-bricks heavy). There are subtle stylisitc shifts throughout that speak to Obituary's genuine musicality and stake a claim for them as arguably one of the finest death metal acts ever.
