Synopsis
This is a sequel to Rhodes's "The Making of the Atomic Bomb." "Dark Sun" chronicles the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1950s. Each country wanted to develop the hydrogen bomb, and to gain the destructive advantage over the other. The book reveals just how close the world came to nuclear war, particularly through the actions of General Curtis LeMay, who, as head of the Strategic Air Command, continually tried to provoke the Soviet Union into taking actions which could justify a U.S. first strike.

Industry Reviews
"A fascinating book...completely engrossing."
Hugh Thomas

"'Dark Sun' is a chilling and brilliant addition to the extensive literature that is now being published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first atomic bomb....Rhodes addresses a well-blended mix of issues--arms-race politics, technological advances, superpower confrontations and undercover intrigue--that push the narrative forward compellingly."
Washington Post Book World - Marcia Bartusiak (08/06/1995)
