This is a seminal work in the art of science fiction film. Truly a work of genius - namely Dan O'Bannon and John Carpenter.

Although this is a comic work, the seeds of later films are clearly evident. The juxtoposition of prosaic, sometimes even infantile, human behaviour with the cold, impersonal and sometimes lethal environment of space is later used to chilling effect in O'Bannon's later film, Alien.

Something of interest: the final scene of the film is lifted directly from an old Ray Bradbury story. I've always wondered what his thoughts were on that.

This is a childhood favorite, although it predates my birth by a decade. This film was the starting point for two great names in the film industry, John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon. I highly recommend this for fans of the genre for several reason, (1) It's a classic (2) It's hilarious (3) and it features Low-Budget creatures at their finest. Oh, and the dialog is dead-on fantastic.

Great cult classic! A must see for any sci-fi fan! I saw this whin I was young in Leadville, Colorado, of all places, in the theater when it was first released. This was and still is to this day a very funny and relevant film.

This is the epitome of a student film. However, the set design and limited special effects are exceptional for it's associated budget. I did enjoy the film, found it moderately humorous, and am pleased to have seen it. Don't buy it expecting to see anything remotely close to the story/cinematic quality of Star Wars or the comedic antics of Spaceballs.

What a great low budget flick! In some respects, you would think they actually had a decent budget. The film explores a side of space travel rarely seen in other movies..boredom, monotony, and borderline schizophrenia...and of course the mischief the crew's 'pet alien' causes wreaks havoc on the otherwise already freaked out crew. I love this film! Great original sci-fi material and excellent 'black comedy'.

  Memories of Yore

I remember this movie from television, years ago. It has a dry sense of humor that resonated with me, and I still remembered various parts, and talked about them for years. After one of these bouts of memory, I came online and searched for the title. I was thrilled to find it online, and immediately bid on it.

It's hilarious!

  "Good Carpenter First!"
Review created: 12/04/09

John Carpenter's 1974 Sci-Fi film about a group of hippie astronauts
dealing with mishaps and a talking computer that wants to bomb everything. This was Carpenter's first feature film and I think it's interesting and
funny. This dvd is nice because it has 2 versions of the film. I recommend
getting this and adding it to your sci-fi or John Carpenter collection.

Dark Star is a dim bulb
Review created: 09/17/09

The reviews I read made it sound like a humorous science fiction farce. I found it to be very slow, tedious, and not very funny. The dialogue with the talking bomb was very predictable and the outcome obvious. The only part I laughed at was the very last scene and it certainly wasn't worth watching the whole movie for that.

  Good for a joke !

I do not like this movie because it's the worst movie I ever started watching, but could not continue watching.
Years ago I rented this movie on TAPE to watch with my family. As we started watching it ( it was so bad ), that my wife could not stand it, and got up and left to wash the dishes; then my son got up and went outside to play; then my daughter finely could not stand it, and got up and went to her room. I finely could not take it, and shut it off, rewound it and returned it to the video store. This is the only movie we have never seen from beginning to end.
Since then, this movie has been the family joke.
I purchased this video ( since it was cheep ) to give to my daughter as a joke.
