Danny Gatton - Strictly Rhythm Guitar (DVD, 2005)

IN A NUTSHELL
if you find it at a good price and you don't hate Country-based playing, get it now. it's a pleasure watching a great guitarist and trying to steal something from him. If looking for a REAL instructional DVD, this is NOT.

WHY I BOUGHT IT
I recently discovered this amazing guitarist (mainly rhythm gtr) and I bought his two main dvds.

WHAT I LIKE
These dvds feature subtitles, a smart idea that allows foreign users to fully understand what's going on.

WHAT I DISLIKE
I can't see it as an instructional video. It's a demonstration of Gatton's skills. It doesn't seem to be well organized. It looks like a "conversation with DG". Like other titles in this series.

DETAILS
Not for rookies! There's no teaching here; DG demonstrates his technique rather than teaching them. You often hear him saying "Don't know much 'bout these things, but I've been playing this stuff for years - and I know it works!".
Despite this, you can still learn a lot of tricks from this dvd of the late Danny Gatton. But you have to work hard. A note: listen to the "Hammond B3 comping style": close your eyes and you'll hear a Hammond - you won't believe it's a Telecaster doing that sound!

IN SINTESI
Se lo trovate a un prezzo umano e non odiate visceralmente il country, compratelo - preferendolo al primo volume (Telemaster) più confuso e dal suono orrendo - senza però aspettarvi un "metodo di studio".

PERCHE' L'HO COMPRATO
Ho scoperto questo fantastico chitarrista (prevalemtemente ritmico) e mi sono procurato i suoi dvd più famosi.

CHE COSA MI PIACE
I dvd di questa serie hanno senz'altro una caratteristica fondamentale per noi italiani: sono sottotitolati - anche in italiano!

CHE COSA NON MI PIACE
La realizzazione è piuttosto approssimativa. Si tratta, come speso in questa serie, di una "conversazione" a ruota libera utile più per acquisire spunti e idee che per organizzare uno studio vero e proprio. Per la didattica, meglio rivolgersi ai dvd Lick Library", assolutamente imbattibili sotto questo aspetto (ma non sottotitolati...).

DETTAGLI
Sicuramente non per chitarristi di "primo pelo". Più che un DVD didattico, direi che è "dimostrativo" delle capacità dello scomparso Danny Gatton. Spesso infatti lo si sente dire "non so bene cosa sia questa roba, ma la suono da sempre e funziona". Ciò nonostante, anche i meno esperti potranno scoprire qualche trucco da inserire nel proprio repertorio. Anche se Gatton era fondamentalmente un chitarrista di derivazione country blues, era capace di incursioni nel blues più puro sconfinando anche nel jazz. Sicuramente interessante il suo tipico accompagnamento alla "Hammond B3" dove riesce a far suonare la Telecaster come un organo col Leslie.
