Album Notes Personnel: Daniel Powter; Brendan Ostrander, Pete Thomas , Davey Faragher, Matt Chamberlain, Mitchell Froom, Val McCallum, Darren Parris, Jeff Dawson. French Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Powter is that rare type of popster who can craft his own compelling material and perform it well. A clear touchstone for Powter is classic Elton John, and this self-titled debut has the stamp of John's 1970s-era, piano-driven, R&B-inflected pop all over it. Powter's single "Bad Day" has made significant commercial inroads on VH1 and AMERICAN lDOL, and the soaring, memorable hook is evidence of what Powter does best. Even better is the breezy, feel-good jam of "Song 6" and the funky groove of "Suspect," which could pass for a Macy Gray single. Powter's sliding falsetto and sharp songcraft make for an appealing listen, and signal the welcome arrival of a new talent.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars out of 5 -- Powter's tunes follow the Elton John/Billy Joel tradition of radio-friendly piano rock....[With] light, layered grooves... Rolling Stone
