Living Dangerously

This is a unique film in its mix of live action and animation. The cartoon characters developed by the boys who form the core quartet of this film come to life as their alter egoes, depicting from time to time the growth each character goes through as they waddle through their formative high school years. Jodie Foster, as the disciplined and disciplining nun Sister Assumpta is both quietly hilarious (especially for those who have endured Catholic school) and fully engaged in her role as demon scooter-riding authority figure. Kieran Culkin and Emile Hirsch show much of their promise in this early career move. Jena Malone, as the primary love interest, has that signature earthy genuineness and vulnerability in earnest, and failing to fall in love with her here is at the viewer's peril. In the end, growth in character is what we know of it -- we make choices, we fail, we have regrets, we move on. Here, the movement from mischief to responsibility takes an unusual and worthy arc. As a connoisseur and student i might add that the dvd extras on this baby are exceptionally entertaining and educational. And the usual outstanding Sundance Channel take added here is worthy of its own viewing party.
