Album Notes Personnel: Mary Weiss (vocals, background vocals); Greg Cartwright (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Andy Maltz (guitar); Eleanor Norton (cello); Dave Amels (piano, celesta, harpsichord, harmonium, organ); Carol Schumacher (bass guitar, background vocals); Lance Wille (drums, percussion, background vocals); Willie Martinez (percussion); Rebecca Mark, Kris Parrish, Billy Miller, Miriam Linna (background vocals); Reigning Sound. A full four decades after the Shangri-Las ended their lengthy run as the girl group world's reigning melodramatic hitmakers, the outfit's lead singer and sole remaining member, Mary Weiss, returns with her unexpected and powerful solo debut, DANGEROUS GAME. Shepherded by the great garage-rock revivalist label Norton Records and featuring modern-day soul-rockers the Reigning Sound as her backing band, DANGEROUS GAME features Weiss singing powerful leads on a series of songs by the Reigning Sound's Greg Cartwright, as well as a pair of lost punk-era gems by the Real Kids and the Dictators and a sterling remake of the Shangri-Las hit "Heaven Only Knows." Sounding stronger and grittier than her 16-year-old self, Weiss returns as a woman to reclaim her girl-group crown.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- [A] remarkable return. An album that is scarily good....[She is] still capable of capturing that terrifying rush of tumultuous emotion... Mojo
4 stars out of 5 -- [S]he has hooked up with Memphis garage-soul outfit The Reigning Sound for 13 new tracks and a lovely version of The Shangri-Las' 'Heaven Only Knows'... Uncut
3.5 stars out of 5 -- The grandiose, effects-ridden production of the Shangri-Las has been replaced by a leaner sound that gives more of the spotlight to her husky voice and the sharp band. Rolling Stone
